SEJ at VR

A really great gig, from someone who is 75, and visibly less mobile than last time I saw him (and he jumped on the piano - Hammersmith Odeon, 1972 and 3  ;D)

He's playing there tonight as well, and then that's it. He spoke about what the Football Club means to him, and how proud he is of it. (Apart from saying the players should play with some f***ing passion next season, unlike this season  ;D)

It is simpler than it looks.

His Bristol gig was at Ashton Gate, so he doesn't mind spreading his football venue favours!

He’s been to Anfield and Carrow Road too, but he didn’t own those clubs, and they didn’t save his life…

I now have a mental image of him duetting with Delia Smith at Carrow Road!  :o

On my way home from seeing Warmduscher doing an in-store at Rough Trade East. Absolutely phenomenal live band. So much energy. Just a 40 minute set but I’m bloody exhausted.

The Darkness, as one of quite a few bands today and the next few days.

I'm all wristbanded and lanyarded up. Good fun! Very hot though.

So, a few more from the weekend...

James Blunt, who was much better than expected...

Andy Fairweather Low, a great set. Looking forward to seeing him again.

The Waterboys. I've now managed to see them three times in a year, having never seen them before. Would happily watch them several times a week!

What fun! Altered Images

No wrinkles on this prima donna

Chatty, fun, lively, engaging. Ronan Keating.

The rythm and blues party man. I should hunt out the photo I have of him playing in Squeeze. Jools Holland

One of Jools's guests, Eddie Reader

The legend that is Steve Winwood

And a grand old man of music, Geno Washington.

HebCelt. Well, first night so far.

We splashed out for 'weekend' tickets, which gets us access from Thurs to Sat to main site.

So far listened to:
Heisk (bit meh)
Ho-Ro (great festival sound)
Tide Lines (brilliant all round, was already familiar with them because MrsC has them in her play rotation

Ears are suffering already. MrsC prefers to be RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE SPEAKERS.
WHAT DID YOU SAY, I CAN'T HEAR YOU.

Looking forward to:

Julie Fowlis and Seasick Steve tonight

Blue Rose code and Skippinish on Sat

Seasick Steve; meh. Brilliant drummer. Steve good guitarist. Can't remember a single track.

Elephant sessions. Absolutely fab.

Currently listening to Rusty Shackle, sans lead singer. Still very good.

~Concluded the festival with Skipinnish and Texas.

If you can, go and see them live. Great performances.

Jaded, that's a great set of pictures.  Eddi Reader's "Perfect" is one of finest records I've heard - makes the weekly shop at Morrison's worthwhile.  On a more sombre note, it's great to see Geno Washington still working!  Sombre note is because I realise it's nearly 60 years since I saw Geno and The Ram Jam Band at Newcastle.  They were terrific and had a level of professionalism that was unusual at the time.  Geno must be nearl 80 and still looks lively!

So, a few more from the weekend...

Cracking bunch of pics!

I've been out two nights in a row this week - I'm feeling too old for such shenanigans but I don't regret it, both were absolutely worth it.

Tuesday was Katy J Pearson doing an in-store at Rough Trade East. She played nearly the whole of her new album, which I adore. It's just a splendid collection of finely crafted songs. Love her voice, and her general style, and she comes across as a thoroughly lovely person. Her band is pretty good too.

Wednesday night was a complete contrast - black midi at Somerset House. Mind blown. I decided I had to go to that one after seeing them on telly at Glastonbury, where they were awesome. They're about 10 times as awesome IRL. They are a band who very much plough their own furrow, completely uncompromising - and they cram so much into every song, it comes across as somewhat chaotic, and sometimes a bit arch and chin-strokey, but they are such a tightly knit group of incredibly talented musicians that I think they get away with it. Also they have an amazing sense of fun in what they're doing. I laughed a lot during the set. Especially when they did mad things like drop a section of Abba's Does Your Mother Know into one of their songs* - and they played something that I'm pretty sure was AC/DC in another. Plus they did some superb full covers too - Yonkers by Tyler the Creator, Crack Rock by Frank Ocean and a pure crowd-pleasing take on Wuthering Heights.

The only minor disappointment was that they didn't have Casanova, their sax player with them. He does add another dimension to their sound.

*anyone who saw their Glastonbury set might remember they dropped a section of Pink's So What into the middle of their song John L

Musical Basics a.k.a Lionel Yu at the Barbican on Sunday.  Even more fun than expected.  Unlikely to be most people's cup of tea, but few people I have seen perform have made music as accessible, and his piano trio arrangements showed real sensitivity to the violin and cello.

Oh yes  Mr Larrington is now collapsed in a steaming heap on the sofa having just got in from an audience with Mr Thorogood at the Shepherd's Bush Empire where, with the aid of low cunning and spending an hour in the queue before the doors opened, Miss von Brandenburg and I managed to be in the front row.  There may be pictures tomorrow.

Well, apart from the bands that I was there to photograph, I have managed to see a bit more.

BCUC did a storming, crowd pleasing set with anger and passion

I was lucky to be able to see them a bit more intimately, in the Press area later

Then there was more mainstay African rock from K.O.G.

and a fascinating re-working of Talking heads Remain in Light by megastar Angelique Kidjo

Saw Nubiyan Twist (again) much less dull than last time.

Mr Bruce. Outstanding Garage, electro-house, jungle and dance-hall. Plus the most manic dance moves. I might have photos later. Oh, and a crowd surf.

It was electric! Probably the best set I’ve seen here.

Quite a contrast from B.Dance, Taiwanese dance group that had loads of symbolic stuff largely lost on this philistine.

The Flaming Lips were main stage stuff, with Wayne Coyne(?) appearing inside a large plastic ball. They set off loads of confetti. It is all over the backstage bar, but biodegradable, so that’s OK  ;D

The fantastic news is that I have discovered the secret backstage bar, which I think opens for a very long time, and isn’t rammed like Molly’s, the campsite bar.

More from your correspondant at an indeterminate time later  ;D
