I think it may depend on whether or not Pogacar starts.  If he doesn't then Evanepol's team may think it's worth putting him in though they might have preferred to wait at least a year.  If neither of them go then Roglic might feel lucky, though I think he may have planned on the Vuelta.

Jonas has to have the best proven form going into the TDF.  Plus Geraint put in a strong performance in the Giro. Thus I’d include them in GC contention.

Roglic not riding. Pogacar is stated as riding, but with only 2 days racing in his legs. Cavendish is riding, but unless fate swings his way he will struggle to grab a stage given who else is there.

Geraint Thomas is not riding the TDF.

I was just saying to my dad earlier the absence of Roglic will hurt Vingegaard by not being able to tandem attack Pogacar if needed. I think Van Aert theoretically could but not so much in the high mountains. I know Sepp Kuss is great at riding tempo but he’s m struggling to recall him playing cat and mouse well or even at all. I think most people would have Jonas as favourite given his Dauphine however , a relatively fresh Pogacar might have a few surprises up his sleeve. IMO most everybody else would usually be riding for 3rd ?

AFAIK Cav IS going - whether he can get a win isn’t so easy to call , though I wouldn’t discount the possibility of some deals in the group

Lot of exciting riders coming through , Pinot is going and Pidcock is fun to watch so it ought to be a banger

I believe there is room for improvement in the classification of young riders based on age. While I understand that age is relative in the context of cycling, considering 25 as the threshold for young riders seems somewhat high. In my opinion, lowering the age to 23 would be a more fitting criterion for categorizing cyclists as young riders in the realm of professional cycling.

Possibly the "once in a lifetime" approach could be included.

Alternatively it could be instituted only if the winner also wins GC?

Maybe base it on the mean or median age of the pelican minus an arbitrary number of years, or something?

TV's Nice C Boardman reckoned the other year that the likes of Bernal and Pogačar are just statistical blips and that they average age of TdF winners was actually going up.

Interesting that the drop to 8 man teams and focus on GC means that sprinters losing out - Demare, Bennett on the outer yet again.

Still enough boring flat stages for the likes of WVA, Philipsen and Jakobsen to fill their boots, but will it stay like that?

They are useful for shifting the peleton from region to region, so will be interesting to see if this is a phase or a long term trend.

Might mean more breakaways if there aren't so many sprinter teams interested in chasing them down

I was just reading the Guardian's breakdown of the teams. I'm a bit out of touch, having not really followed pro cycling very closely for the last few years, but I was less surprised by the names I don't recognise than some of the ones I do - apparently, Luis Leon Sanchez, 93, will be there again.

Crikey.

Seem to be quite a lot of riders the wrong side of 35 on the start list.

ETA: in fact, it turns out Lulu isn't even the oldest rider in the race this year - he's pipped to that title by Dries Devenyns

Though Alejandro Valverde, 98, has quit the pro road peloton and is instead part of Movistar Team Gravel Squad.  That Movistar Team Gravel Squad is even A Thing was news to me, and makes me wonder how their Strategy AI Turing Machine will cope with the extra burden of loose surfaces.

Woo, I should (fingers crossed) get home from Merkin land just in time for this, having watched that TDF documentary on Netflix at my colleague's gaff last week. Was quite amusing watching the amount of Bad Swears going on in the team cars.

This time we nearly have more fast men for the hilly stages as fast men for the flat stages.

Anyone know where on the TdF website the total elevation for a given stage is stated?

Under “Route” the page for each stage gives the start and finish elevations plus those of any categorised climbs but as far as I can tell that’s yer lot – no Audax-stylee total amount of Up.
