This is what Langer week is all about, this year it lands on the 5th - 11th October
THE WORD LANGAR was officially added to the British Oxford English Dictionary in 2008 and is the term used to describe a common, free kitchen and food that is served to visitors at a Sikh Gurdwara.
But it is more than that. Langar was designed by the founder of the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in the 15th century in order to uphold the principle of equality between all people regardless of religion, caste, colour, creed, age, gender or social status.
The unique concept of providing for, preparing, sharing and eating food together as a community, is one that is key in Sikhi to convey the idea of nourishment for both the body and mind and as a statement of unity, compassion, generosity and to establish equality.
Anybody fancy meeting up and cycling to Southall? There is no religious pushing all that is asked that you cover your head, head gear is supplied, no wear shoes and wash you hands. Went last year, and had a really nice meal with genuinely friendly people. The food is vegetarian. You can leave a donation but there is no pressure to. You can even help if you wash trays.
What do you people think?
