Title: Eurovision 2011
Post by: TimO on 12 May, 2011, 08:39:23 pm
I just turned on the box (I wanted some background noise), and found that the Eurovision semi-final is being broadcast.

As ever it's a bit strange ...

So far I've seen Belgium with a technically impressive a capella arrangement, which I can't say I liked.

Slovakia had a couple of blonde hottie twins, which was nice eye candy.

Moldova was just downright weird, with a unicyclists, and pointed hats which made them look like some sort of strange garden gnomes. :-\

Oh no! Young Zoe was flicking channels, one of my pet hates. I said to her "If you change channel again it's staying on that channel until you go to bed", and guess what she did? And guess what channel she flicked to? How long do I have to put up with this utter carp?

I'm not strictly speaking watching it on the TV, I've got it streamed onto the secondary monitor of my PC at work, so I can still work on the primary monitor (or post on YACF!)

I see Israel has Dana International singing again!

I am very very disappointed that I can't watch this year's. I stupidly agreed to go to Northumbria for a birthday shindig without checking the dates - if I'd realised it was Eurovision weekend, I'd have said no. I could record it and watch it on Sunday, but that's no fun.

What's blue and can't sing?

I may or may not see the final, since I'll be recovering from the FNRttC.  The chances are that even if I start watching it, I'll fall asleep part way through.  I'm not sure it'll be exciting enough to keep me conscious!

 actuallythought the song mildly interesting.
Is it me, or are all the acts particularly bland and lacking in kitch and camp this year?
Is that an example of being damned by faint praise? ;D

And did you not see Moldova?  8)
I kinda liked the Jerry entry and it had a different sound to it, so not faint praise.
Moldova was pretty silly, but so many of the acts seem like they've come straight out of Corporate.

I'm a bit late, since I feel asleep through the entire live performance after doing the FNRttC, so have just watched it on iPlayer!  That did have the advantage of allowing me to fast forward through the boring stuff, and most of the voting!

Having seen the second semi-final, and the final, Moldova definitely won in the totally raving nutters category, although the competition wasn't as stiff this year, since Ireland didn't vote a glove puppet in as their competitor and went with Jedward instead, which wasn't (quite) at that same level of insanity.

The winner seemed a bit Meh to me.  If I had to pick a serious winning entry, there were a lot of others I would have gone for before Azerbaijan.  Having said that, who wants serious, Go go go Unicycling Fairy Garden Gnomes. ;D

Title: Re: Eurovision 2011
Post by: TimO on 15 May, 2011, 05:37:57 pm
The Euro in Eurovision Song Contest comes from the European Broadcasting Union, which is how states like Israel and Egypt take part in the contest when they're not actually in geographic Europe.

I don't believe Associate members of the EBU can enter the Song Contest, but if they could, then we could have US or Australian entries. :)

(Only Active members of the EBU can take part in the contest, and there are generally about fifty countries within this category, although it goes up and down as countries become (in)eligible to join, or in some cases, cease to exist, or come into existence as countries).

Apparently Lebanon almost did once, but there was an issue about the neighbour to the south. The Lebanese wanted to omit all mention of their participants from the broadcast (by scheduling of commercial breaks?), & were told in no uncertain terms that wasn't allowed. You transmit the entire programme, or nothing.

Tunisia was also close to participating, but didn't. I don't know if there was a similar problem.
