Thinking about new monitors.
« on: 16 January, 2018, 06:26:14 pm »
My surface pro drives three monitors (yes i'm that greedy).  All three are 27-28 inches ish.  Two are 2560x1440 resolution, the third is a much older 1920x1200 resolution.   The 2560x1440 resolution monitors are just a little too small for my eyes to easily read normal text (even with my brand new glasses) but the 1920x1200 monitor is lovely.  So, even though the two 2560x1440 are only three years old I'm feeling its time to get some 32 inch 2560x1440 monitors in to replace them.  I work as a contractor so my Ltd will be buying them threfore I'm focussed on good monitors as they are used 10-12 hours a day.

Would anyone be able to recommend such a monitor ( 32 inch, not curved, no speakers, mainly for text work with occasional gaming).

Not had any issues with my 32" 4k Acer Predator (can't be more specific than that coz it's at home and I'm not) thus far.

A 4K monitor at 32 inches would mean even smaller text or setting the monitor to 200% scaling to get back to an effective 1920x1080.

So I think I need a 2560x1440 monitor at 32 inches.  But the brand is useful to know.

I'm in a similar position, Ltd co contractor, had enough of some elderly monitors.  In my case the main reason to upgrade is they are 1920x1080 and 1080 is too small.  At my current contract I have 2 x 1920x1200 and when I go home I really notice the lack of vertical so I'd think hard about that beast you linked.  However, I found there are 3840x1600 monitors appearing now in appropriately outrageous dimensions.  My notes are at home but I think this lovely is the one I decided would be the almost the same width as my current pair and taller.

Graphics card & internal cooling upgrade parts await at home for the arrival of the PSU I need to run them.  The monitor will probably happen after the corp tax bill is paid in April.

Good point about the depth.  1600 vertical would be nice. Unfortunately 38 inches gets me to the same problems as I'm having with my current monitors.  The ratio of screen size by diagonal dpi demonstrates.

Old Dell 28"             1920 x 1200  -> 80 ddpi/in
New dell 28 "           2560 x 1440 -> 104 ddpi/in (could actually be 27 inch)
Samsung 49 inch     3840 x 1080 -> 81 ddpi/in
LG 38 inch              3840 x 1600 -> 110 ddpi/in

The old dell is very very easy on my ageing eyes, the new dells are very hard.  I can't see the point in buying a high resolution monitor if I then immediately have to scale the display.

So It looks like I'm stuck with two 32 inch 2560x1440 monitors for the present (equivalent to 92 ddpi/in)

How far away are the existing monitors and what orientation?

At home I've got two Dell 23" 1920x1080 monitors at about 24" away from my eyes (side by side, horizontal to give 3840 x 1080), any closer and there's too much head turning. I can't imagine 3 x 23" monitors let alone 3 x 27" unless I mounted them vertically (that's a simple way of getting more depth, e.g. 3 * 1920 x 1200 to give effective 3600 x 1920).

My screens are 3+ feet away from my eyes in landscape orientation.  Just right for multiple A4 pages side by side.

My Mac can show 8K on my Dell P2715Q (4K) thanks to the OS's scaling options, plus, I presume, the GPU being able to output that resolution. Tried it, then got to play 'Where's my cursor and how can I turn the resolution down again ASAP?'. Microscopically unusable, I can't imagine 32" makes it much better. Marques Brownlee tested the 3218K & had Windows scaling set to 300%!

An off the wall thought:  How about a larger monitor which can display upto four feeds at once?

Like this one?

I still love my iMac 27 inch 5k, though I'd like to merge it with the OLED LG thing in the living room, the blacks on that are so awesome and complete that I suspect they don't even emit a whiff of Hawking radiation. That would be cool. One day soon I'll have to explain to children what pixels are.

FYI, that will show 27 640x480 images as the same time.
(Pedants will spot that three of those images would have to be shown in two halves)

The discussion here confirms I'm on the right path by ignoring the X/Y resolution as the sole measure of screen quality and focussing on diagonal dpi per diagonal inch.  Still no luck in finding a physically larger screen with a diagonal dpi/in of around 90.

I'd just increase the scaling. My new office TV is 85" 4k and I use it as a second monitor sometimes, even on that I have the scaling up sometimes.
