Percentage of rides this year
« on: 25 August, 2013, 08:58:58 am »
After reading the Eddington numbers thread, I became frustrated that I hadn't consistently put in large numbers of rides of the same distance, so my number would likely have been quite low. I have, however done a fair bit of mileage, but Eddington numbers are about consistently plugging away at the exact same mileage over and over again...

Anyway, the point of this thread is to see how people train for distance. I've noticed on MCL that some of the highest accumulative mileages are made up of daily medium distance rides, so for example riding 6-days a week at 60-100km per day. Others put in very few of these sorts of rides, but make it up by doing massive mile-eaters on the weekends, like audaxing 200-600km and then leapfrogging by doing LEL type distances of 1400km over 4 days.

It's fascinating to see how this all pans out in percentages... Taking 2013 as an example, based on individual rides of 0-59km, 60-99km 100-160km and 161km and over I've done:

0-59km: 180 rides @ 4832km = 44%

60-99km: 22 rides @ 1744km = 16%

100-160km: 20 rides @ 2295km = 21%

161 and over: 10 rides @ 2128km = 19%

TOTAL of 232 rides - 11,001km

I've gathered this by exporting into Excel from My Cycling Log and sorting by distance to determine the different distance brackets. This is kind of relative, though, as on some days I will do 2-3 rides per day, for example 1 ride out to a train station, a 2nd will be something like an audax, the 3rd will be the ride back home. With commuting, however, I almost always make the to and from trip one ride... despite there being an 8-9 hour 'rest' in-between. Same with doing extra mileage after work with my backpack on - it gets chucked into the same ride as my commute...

What are your 'ride' numbers for 2013 so far?

0-59km: 240 rides @ 3827km = 45%

60-99km: 3 rides @ 229km = 3%

100-160km: 23 rides @ 2612km = 30%

161 and over: 9 rides @ 1909km = 22%

TOTAL of 275 rides - 8578km

The club's 100k 'challenge' accounts for the dead zone that is the 60-99k category with 12 rides only just over the 100k mark.
