Cheap Sleeps in Edinburgh
« on: 24 November, 2018, 10:25:10 am »
I have just got tickets to see The Proclaimers in Edinburgh next July. Given my penury, I will need somewhere cheap to stay that isn't a yoof-filled hostel nor full of dossers.
I've seen a few places on AirBnB, but am wondering if there are alternatives...?

I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
The College has its own hotel at 10 Hill Place, which is very central.
There's a discount for College Members and Fellows.
We stayed there last year.

Price was still on a par with a Central London hotel.

Sorry!

There are 4 hostels listed for Edinburgh here:

https://independenthostels.co.uk/

Would any of those suit? (I don't have any personal knowledge of these, but have used independent hostels elsewhere (mostly Wales) without problem).

Better not mention that two hours of pushing broom buys a eight by twelve four bit room, but that would be covering something.

The SYHA Edinburgh Central is not bad. Usually fairly quiet, not too many actual yoofs. Option of private rooms if you want. Can feel like a bit of a hike up and down Leith Walk to get there, but plenty of buses passing by.

Or the SYHA have a summer hostel, in various student flats. So gives you a private room. Usually on the Cowgate, so very central. Though maybe noisy with drunks wandering past all night...

Or you can book a room in the student halls of residence. Not too far to walk from the centre.

Alternatively there are a few Travelodge or Premier Inn type options

When I looked at Premier Inn options for Edinburgh, they seemed both pricy and inconveniently located.

I chose the pricy RCSEd option because the location was great for the meeting at the Museum. Premier Inn was miles out and not cheap IIRC.

Even I understood that straight away. Having said that, I had never heard of the Proclaimers prior to learning about them on YACF.

If its next July then a rail linked budget hotel may be your best option.
Anything in towns going to be expensive already but out by dunfermline or Musselburgh might still be tolerably priced if the timings and train costs suit.

The one and only time I heard the proclaimers live I was struggling up Falkland hill on the bike while they sang 500 miles to crowd of neeburs in the field at the bottom.

Have you tried Booking.com? I found a double room for £52 in Edinburgh on Thursday evening via Booking.com

I saw the Proclaimers in early '88 and a few times since, but having seen them perform in front of a Scots crowd on TV at Hebceltfest, their home city is where I want to see them next.

'muchty village hall's not that impressive a venue TBH, though if that sells out the Sterling warehouse is always a possibility.

The ideal venue to see them in would be Easter Road Stadium in Leith; suppose the castle is a good enough alternative.

I suppose I should have said 'adopted home city'  :)

Easter Road would be brilliant. Dunno why they didn't go for it.
