Bill Withers.

Last time I looked, Ain't No Sunshine had about 15 million hits on youtube, now it's got 258,741,580. I've always liked Bill, so I searched for my favourite, which has 1,179 views. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys1cbwWKw8w

There's a live version of Use Me somewhere out there on YouTube with the world's coolest man on drums...

ETA: it's got a even funkier groove with the slowed-down tempo.  Here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3hBYTkI-sE
Check out the drummer's grin at 0:13!  ;D 8)

Well that had passed us by. We know not whither he has gone but his music shall not wither.

I think Bill is still alive and people are fooled by his wiki entry, which starts with "was a....".  That's because he just left the business when he wanted to.  Hope so, anyway.   That is a very popular clip, because of the drummer, but even Bill can't really carry off wearing a tangerine roll-neck - nobody could.  His music is really durable, though: I had my car broken into in Southampton in the late 70s/early 80s and they threw Bill's album (including Use Me) on the ground under the car.  I didn't know this until I reversed over it.  Still plays perfectly.  Very special artist!

Edit  Damn, I was wrong, sorry.  RIP Bill and thanks for the music.

A great loss indeed. But 81 isn't a bad age to go.  And is there anyone else in recent decades who's written a song (Ain't no Sunshine) that's been covered by artists as diverse as Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson and Sting, to name just three?
