What's that smell?
« on: 22 October, 2023, 05:37:30 pm »
In our back garden I keep getting whiffs of a slightly sweet but funky smell. I don't think it's fox as I reckon the garden is too well fenced off for them to get in, I can't remember what fox funk smells like either.
Any other suggestions? There are plenty of herbs in the garden but I don't think it's any of them.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Privet or ivy flowers?  Pretty strong here, just now.

No privet or ivy in my garden, and I don't think there is in my neighbour's either. Defo not weed, more pleasant than that.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

The internet should have more 'What's that smell?' threads.  They're probably doomed from the outset, but fun is pretty much guaranteed.

Our viburnums, which usually flower around Christmas, are already  in flower - sweet smell like camay soap.
I suspect the winter box  (Sarcococca) which also has a sweet smell will be early as well.
Not to be confused with box as used in hedging, which smells of tom cat pee!

That reminds me – yew berries smell, to me, like dog shit. Or perhaps not like dog shit, but the smell of yew berries reminds me of the smell of dog shit.

Any farmers moving silage? That can have a sweetish, herby smell.

In Swindon, it would be dope.  It's all-pervading.

Perhaps I can assist with identifying the underlying substance?
