Caught part of Which way is the front line from here? last night. A documentary about the late photojournalist Tim Hetherington. I missed the start where he was working in Liberia and had to get to bed before the end, switching off whilst he was working in Afghanistan. What I saw of the program looked very thought provoking and at times, harrowing and emotional. I will have to see if it is on catch up.

Caught up on this last night after seeing it on Gogglebox. Quirky detective drama about a middle aged loner cop who sees dead people, in a Sixth Sense stylee. It's actually really rather good - the wilful quirkiness could be very irritating but it works well. The excellent casting helps - Nicola Walker off of Spooks and Stellen Skarsgaard off of everything Stellen Skarsgaard has ever been in, plus Lesley Manville off of Mike Leigh and Eddie Marsan off of pretty much any half decent telly thing you care to mention.

I facebooked a friend the other day to tell her poor old dowdy Ruth from Spooks is now a police officer on ITV at 9pm on Thursdays, along with bad Connie and half of Waking the Dead, and she replied that she's also a deceased cop with half a head on BBC with a troubled ponderous Swede.

I watched part II of the DIY SOS thing where they revamped a Manchester street as a haven for physically and mentally injured veterans. The humility of severely wounded Gambian Irish Guardsman Lamin and his family had me totally tear sodden.

The first episode of Cradle To Grave was great - especially the funeral scene, which had me guffawing loudly - but I found the second ep a bit meh. I suspect there's a danger of it becoming very formulaic very quickly. Will probably keep watching though.

Same here.  I've kept watching but mainly for the Dad's storyline (Peter Key) because absolutely nothing interesting has happened in Danny Baker's early life it seems.

It was odd to see them coming out of Stockport Plaza Theatre (from a David Essex concert supposedly in London) on the same day I had been photographing the Stockport Plaza Theatre though.  It was also the same day that a TV drama "Houdini and Doyle" was being filmed in Stockport (again for a London setting).

Who knew?  Stockport, the new Hollywood.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

Psychedelic Britannia from last night is worth iPlaying.  Even if you're not interested in the music it's worth watching just to see how Steve Howe has actually turned into Gollum.

I have to confess that the Grauniad has our TV watching nailed this week:

http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2015/nov/01/week-in-tv-the-dresser-catastrophe-detectorists-homeland-jekyll-hyde

(havent seen the first or last yet, but the middle 3 were brilliant!)

Is there a Catastrophe thread? Well anyway, S2 totally hit the ground running. There's quite a confusing twist-let at the start, but in fairness it leads to some very original humour around "new baby arrives". Plus all the usual in-family in-fighting, sarcasm, bickering and knob gags. More!

Impressive performance by Imperial on last night's University Challenge, scoring over 300 points.

Funnily enough, I saw an episode of Pointless last week in which all three couples in the second round also scored over 300 points - sightly less impressive in that context.

Currently on our regular watch list are:

The Last Kingdom - TV adaptation of Bernard Cornwall's Uthred books
You, Me and the Apocalypse - Silly (ish) end of the world comedy drama from the "Horrible History" team
The Flash - Needs no thought, TLD loves it.
Supergirl - ditto, but with the added expectation that you might see dancing babies...

If anyone is watching the Great British Pottery Off, or whatever it's called, I hope you're rooting for Jim - I've known him for many years and he's a thoroughly lovely and decent chap.

Right, have watched Jeckyl-n-Hyde.
Very good, I thought. Genuinely different to other treatments.

But crikey - did they REALLY think it was suitable for a 6:30 slot? It would have been pretty OTT in the Dr Who time-slot!

London Spy ;  Wow!!!

Not sure I've EVER seen telly like this.

The only downers:
- a very very well worn (and thus predictable even to this dunce) plot device ending Ep1
- err ...
- oh ok; I cant see how they can keep this up. They'll have to bring some more spy-stuff plot in PDQ, which might change the whole tone. Nothing can be this absorbing for 4 hours.

I wasn't totally smitten to be honest, not even by Ben Whishaw's pert buttocks. I like dramas to be expansive but there is such a thing as too much detail (and I don't mean the sex scenes).

And then after meandering ponderously through the early stages of the relationship, it suddenly and inexplicably jumped 8 months - which I'm sure will become significant as the plot unfurls itself, but frankly I don't think I have the patience for it.

Power to the People, first of three, was well worth a watch.  Looks at the old Ferrybridge coal-fuelled station in Yorkshire and how it is being squeezed out of the market.

Jessica Jones - latest in the Netflix/Marvel "Defenders" quadrilogy, started with Daredevil and will move onto Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

Don't expect The Flash, nor Arrow, it's dark, very very dark.  Also stars an former Doctor Who...

Watched the first episode of Capital today - and so far I think I like it better than the book.

It shares the same problem as the book, namely that it is populated with broad pastiches rather than fully formed characters, but that somehow seems more forgivable when they're being brought to life by the likes of Toby Jones and Rachael Stirling (although I imagined Roger being a bit more 'alpha male' than Toby Jones).

Bit of Sliding Doors geography to note - odd seeing someone get off the Tube in the City then enter a building in Southwark (Roger's office is in the Blue Fin, where I used to work).

D'you know, Lance's / Andy's wife is Diana Rigg's daughter in real life (and indeed in Detectorists).
