I first came across "the Scunthorpe problem" many years ago when I saw a comedian, a native of that town, who introduced himself as "The man who put the..." - you can fill in the rest.

I think what they've done here is lifted the story from elsewhere and asked the computer to change a few words to avoid accusations of plagiarism. Idiots.

Part of my job involves investigating cases of student misconduct in their assessments. It is not unheard of for students to crudely apply automated synonym substitution in a failed effort to avoid plagiarism detection software. I've seen submissions with "multi-spy systems" [agent]; "data furniture" [tables] and "computing climate" [environment].
