Title: Paris - Nice 2021
Post by: Pingu on 07 March, 2021, 08:17:11 pm
Ritchie Porte got his usual race contribution in nice and early  :-\

Caused by being wiped out by someone else who'd just run over a bidet bidon, apparently.  No goats involved.

What Porte didn't realise was that INEO$ were happy to have him back as a bad luck sacrificial goat/lightning rod - he's there to catch all the bad juju that would otherwise affect Tao, G and Bernal. :demon:

During last year’s sterling effort by R Porte on the TdF, especially after his chase back to the bunch on that mountain stage with the gravelly bit on it, TV's Super D Millar suggested he be T Ineo$' leader this year.  Nice one, Super D.  Not.

Didn't think much of the doctoring on display letting George Bennett get back on his bike y'day having broken his magic hat and having trouble standing up straight...

They managed to push him out for the TT   :-\

I guess that means the Porte juju didn't work.

Seems strange the response of some sports over others considering how much is known about concussion and sporting head injuries and their long term effects.

Surely (and don't call me Shirley) if the magic hat has a large chunk missing from it, it's enough to carry out a formal concussion protocol??

Cycling is a movable feast, though.  By the time the medics reach a crash scene team personnel can have the rider back on his bike and a mile down the road, as per Bardet in the Tour last year.

I am enjoying Adam Blythe as part of the commentary team. Lots of useful insights and less hyberbole than some.

The docs were all over Martin after his crash today.

They were all over Ion Izagirre when he crashed in the Tour last year, a day or two after Bardet's incident, but one of the colemantators noted at the time that if they haul a rider off for extensive checks that’s his race screwed whether he's concussed or not.  I suspect both the riders, or at least their employers, would take a dim view of this becoming a regular occurrence.

NC Boardman:These people need protecting from themselves!
EC Boardman:Oh! No! They! Don’t!

Loved the Belgian Break today! But I'm not so impressed by the race. Tirreno-Adriatico seems much more interesting.

Hmmm. Not sure exactly what that means. Probably missing some obvious reference, m'lud, but the straight answer is both P-N and T-A are on Eurosport/GCN.

Another effortless win from Primoz Roglic.

Compare and contrast, his immediate post stage demeanor to that of MVP's on his StradeBianche win, and TA stage win.

Think we will be seeing a lot of Primoz this year.

Don't think it is.

ITV4 do the Tour, but that is about it.

£40 a year will get you Eurosport app, which I watch on smart tv, or you could get a strategic  £7 a month GCN+ subscription which gives same races as ES but on tablets, phones, laptops and mirror onto tv

ITV4 are covering Paris-Nice. They covered the last Vuelta. The last Giro was on Freeview, I think it was GCN but I can't remember what channel it was on.

Ooh, cheers, I hadn't noticed ITV4 were doing a bit more.

Opens up the options a bit.

Yes, ITV4 are covering a good bit more than just the TDF. I hadn't seen that they were doing Paris-Nice, but I prefer the ad-free coverage on Eurosport/GCN+ anyway. If you catch it at the right time, a subscription to Eurosport Player can be had for £20 from time to time.

According to the Giro thread we watched it on Quest. :)

Hadn't realised that was for a whole year. Or £7 if you only want a month.

What are the Eurosport colemantators like? Annoying or not?

Rob Hatch is ok, so are Adam Blyth and Brian Smith.
OTOH, you also get Carlton Kirby.

The only reason I won't turn off immediately I hear Carlton Kirby commentating is if I fancy keeping a tally of his 'quite frankly's, 'likewise's, 'I guess'es, 'have some fun's, 'go long's and 'pointy end's.

Not to mention, 'the flamme rouge doth beckon', 'a fighting force', 'he's gone pale of pallor', etc etc.

Dan Lloyd is an effective counter to Carlton Kirby, and together they are quite entertaining. Kirby is annoying from time to time - if I hear another phlegmmy intake of breath I may very well shoot the telly - but he's quite knowledgeable yet lets Dan do the serious analysis. Rob Hatch and Adam Blythe similarly work well together. I don't think either team is as good as the ITV4 setup, but that's pretty thinly spread.

Was watching PN (I think yesterday or friday) and one of the commentators was saying "Roglic just doesnt look right today. He's clearly not comfortable on the bike today. Something isn't right"  a few minutes before Roglic put in a blistering attack and won the stage  ::-)

I like the older succesful ex-pro commentators best, people like Phillipa York, and Sean Kelly, because they have been at the pointy end, understand exactly what is going on and can give interesting insights in comparison to their day.

People like Kirby and Ligget are just shrill windbags, whose only function is to act as a counter point.

That was Adam Blythe, who is an ex-pro. He had the decency to be embarrassed by his mistake. That said, I suspect that was the impression Roglic intended to give.

Gosh that was a bit more exciting than expected.
Indeed.
I wonder if Poglic hadn't given such a blunt interview after winning on the penultimate day, whether more effort would have been made to neutralise the race when he crashed (twice).
I guess the peleton sent out a 'message' about how to behave.

Even if I'm wrong - it was a bloomin' good last two days.

Just thinking about that unmarked, unprotected bollard that took out Tony Martin the day before.  Would he have been able to drag Roglic back to the peleton?  He would have been the ideal person to try anyway.
