Title: The Capitals of East Anglia 300 from Cambridge on 10 July 2021
Post by: wilkyboy on 12 June, 2021, 12:16:18 am
Cambridge Audax are running the Capitals of East Anglia 300km event once again this July.  The route heads far out into the ‘wilds’ of Suffolk to dip a toe in the North Sea at Dunwich, and then returns to the civilisation that is Norfolk, before heading back to Cambridge via the ‘badlands’ of Fenlandia.

The route visits five seven capitals of East Anglia on its way, although the real interest is the predominance of very quiet lanes and B-roads that make up this route, taking you through some very picturesque farming landscapes of one of the most important agricultural regions of the UK, as well as visiting RSPB Minsmere and the Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB.

A named storm when we ran it in April 2019, but this July it should be sunny with tailwinds both ways ... probably.

Ooooh.  I haven't done a 300k for a while now.  Given that I survived the Pork Pie in much better shape than I expected I'm in.  Shame that timings don't allow  the route from Ely to be along the river to Barkway, Wicken Fen, White Fen to Lode.

Lovely route, and would be an exercise in nostalgia for me as grew up riding these roads, but unfortunately a bit far away for me to enter. By the way, a small detour could bag you an eighth capital, Hadleigh - Guthrum's capital.

That would make a really nice 4-day camping tour for me. Hmmm...

Hmmmm indeed.   I was just thinking about a short camping tour in that part of the world the other day.   I'll need to do a few day rides first to see if my knee is uptoit though.

I checked the route (DIY) yesterday — I got to Ely just as the sun dropped below the horizon, so yes it's probably the wrong time of day for a +15km diversion along bridleways and drove roads.
