I think it was George Orwell did a nice explanation as to why folks buy cheap "posh" stuff or "luxury" items rather than decent stuff.
Probably in "the road to Wigan Pier" (which is a canal quay, I visited it once killing time waiting for a train after a meeting in Wigan.  8 hours travel for a 4 hour meeting (+lunch)
