U.K. plug adapter for twist on power supply
« on: 19 May, 2021, 08:03:36 am »
I bought a thing off eBay which came with a 2 pin connector.
This is the sort where the actual pins and plastic bit is circular, slots into the main power supply and turns to lock into place. I would like to get the correct adapter if possible. Does anyone know of a place for such things?

Picture/link?

If it’s what I think it is I don’t think those things are standardised at all and you just have to poke around the internet until you find something that looks right.

Is it a light fitting, like a GU10?
It is simpler than it looks.

Why not cut off the odd plug and replace with a UK one?

I presume the OP is talking about something like this with removable pins:

It’s not just photography; there was someone selling standard usb cables and kettle leads on eBay for around £35 as Behringer (a popular brand of musical equipment) compatible cables.

The advert was honest but the cables are no different from those in my tangled mess. Although perhaps the price is fair enough if I have to avoid untangling them.

Exactly.  I know that everybody in the UK will have spare foreign adapters but just wondered.

The interface between the pins and the main body of the adaptor isn't standard. Each manufacturer does their own thing, so getting hold of one could be diffcult.

You could buy one of these:-

which will often fit onto European mains adaptors.

As a side note, today I received a device with mains adaptor with replaceable pins. Oddly, it contained two USA plugs, one with holes in the pins, and one without. I have no idea why both would be needed, or why having, or not having, holes would ever make a difference. I don't even know what the holes do.

A very neat point on the adaptor is that each set of pins can be fitted in 4 different directions. That allows the cable and the body of the adaptor to point up, down, left or right when pugged in.

The holes are used by springy bits inside the socket to hold the plug more firmly. You can also put a padlock through to prevent someone using an appliance.

The one without holes appears to be for China. No idea why:

They also have two apparently identical (but different) plugs for Europe and Korea.
