What's the deal on McDonald's at the moment (thinking of Amesbury) - are they likely to let a cyclist in at 5am, order food and use the toilet?

No issues on Green & Yellow Fields on 1st May going in to order food and use the toilets at whatever time it was Veloboy and I got to Barton Mills McDonald's (2am or so). We did have to go outside to eat.

I used Gainsbourgh McDonald's on my 600 perm without issue at 1st June, although that was (just) before midnight.
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

Be worth giving them a ring to find out the score. I’ve done that when planning 24hr McDs I haven’t visited before.

Definitely worth checking in advance. Arrived at Ryde McDonald's at 2302 on Saturday. Inside service had ended at 2300 and they wouldnt serve us in the drive thru. Their website said 24 hours (which I doubted) but still surprised to find the door closed by 11. Lots of variation of openings hours out there.

I've just remembered; think we used this one on the Moonrakers ride? It wasn't just a drive-thru, that makes a difference.

When we got to McD on the route check ride a few weeks ago it was drive through only... and not cycle through. On the 2019 route check ride the restaurant was open and we went in and had breakfast. I just rang them up and am told that it's 24h now but drive through only 10pm-6am, and McD policy is no cycle through - "it's not safe". My point that we have to share roads with cars that are going a lot faster than at the drive through cut no mustard. It's McD head office policy. Utterly absurd and discriminatory. Perhaps AUK board could take it up on behalf of all ride orgs?

Meanwhile, happily there is also on the same site a large 24h co-op supermarket with coffee machine and pastries etc. where staff are super-friendly. I just rang and spoke to the manager who is now expecting 50 of you for breakfast from 4-8 am next Thursday, she'll get the pastries ready early for you! And there are toilets.

Another reason not to patronise McFu**ers. I have to be on the point of death to be tempted and even then I hold my nose.

Cool, coop it is then. Reducing the number of decisions to make on the road is always good.

Forecast says mild with some sun, some heavy showers all week. Probably wettest on Sat. not much wind. Could be worse in July.

Be nice to get out of the London sprawl before any rain arrives.

I'm planning to watch the f##tball then make the 2300 start - unless the Danes are 4-0 up at half-time ...

For your Newquay control, a shout out for the recently opened (and group tested on a DIY 200 Penzance>Exeter last month)

0730-1600

They had locked their doors by 1530 so no pasties for me, managed to find another cafe further along that was closing for real at 1600. At least better than K&SW in 2013 when all you could get at 1am in Newquay was an ATM receipt.

Two days after finishing the event and I still feel a bit like I've been run over by something heavy! Thanks to Richard and the team for everything that they did to make this event happen. Congratulations to all that took part in the event. Nobody should expect a 1000 km bike ride to be straightforward and this one was no exception. For me at least, it was a battle right to the end!

Thanks and well done Lee +11 for finishing this, undoubtedly a challenging route in sometimes less than benign weather conditions.

33 starters, 12 finishers.

Likely to run again next year as a PBP pre-qualifier. I heard more than one rider opine that PBP is a walk in the park compared to LLEL...
