DIY route advice from Alexandria (near Dumbarton)
« on: 16 July, 2021, 01:36:12 pm »
We are staying at Alexandria for a week, w/c 25th July.  Weather and the current Mrs Socks permitting, I'm hoping to do a 200k DIY from Alexandria.  First loop heading up Gare Loch and Loch Long.  Then across to Loch Lomond and back down the A82.  Then a loop across to Stirling and Port of Mentieth.  The ride would be midweek.

Any suggestions welcome for specific roads to avoid.  Or ones to include?

It goes just north of Alexandria, you could call in at Culty, loop round the Trossachs, maybe Loch Katrine, and back via Duke's Pass?

The road around Loch Katrine is all ridable, and mostly traffic-free BTW

Part of that follows the same route as the Dumb Run used to, although we peeled off at Winchburgh for the bridge and stations east. Nice roads — at night anyway.

You can dodge the main Stirling road to the south for a few extra Kms, but I trust Socks to spot that himself :)

I did this route as DIY today, you can follow it from Balloch round to Dunblane but come back via Doune, Thornhill & Fintry. Some roads can get busy so best done early.

Thanks for those suggestions.  In the end I just did a short ride down the cycle route to Bowling, then along the canal to our daughter's flat.  Maybe next time ...

Anyone planning a ride round Loch Katrine should check the road has re-opened.
There was major civil engineering works going on there, but that was a year ago now:

ETA: Yes, it has re-opened, but is subject to closures in times of heavy rainfall:

Yes, its been open for a while now, but the cafe at Stronachlachar is still closed on weekdays.
The wee blether cafe at Kinlochard is also shut.
