Cider with Rosie 100/200 10 Oct 2010
« on: 21 September, 2010, 12:10:06 am »
Hi All

As promoter of the Cider with Rosie 100 and 200 on Sunday 10th October, I need to arrange Controls.  Two, where yacf/Audax members could help are Hungerford and Lacock, where to fund a Cheltenham CTC member is a drain on event funds.  If anyone in the Hungerford (10.36-13.12 ) or  (Chippenham (12.18-16.36) or Tetbury (11.36-13.42) area is free for a few hours on 10 October and able to cycle there and set up table (all Cafe controls) I would be most appreciative. You will be rewarded with some expenses and the camaraderie of the riders.  If you want to ride the event within the volunteers 3wk window, that will be a free entry.

And do not forget, you are also welcome to just enter the Event; the routes form a triangle, with the 100 taking a lower parallel between Fairford and Tetbury.  Highlights are the exceptionally tranquil R Coln valley and Cotswold villages, the Kennet valley and A4 visitation to Silbury Hill and Cherhill White Horse for tea in Lacock village.  Finally, a touch of Fosse Way and the Slad Valley and return across to Andoversford provide the Cider with Rosie experience.

It must be the sudden end of Summer but entries for the CwRs is disappointingly low.  I will be lucky to break even on current numbers, so where are all the riders from such a large membership?

Main reason for the post is for those who have entered the 100; start time will be as Brevet and Calendar at 0930, not 1000 as on info sheet.

aha - a late entry.  Good chap.  See you there.

I didn't recognise any other yACF names from Steve's recent emails, but with aliases it's hard to tell.

If I could square the logistics I'd be along but alas I cannot so I will not.

Have a great day.

Can't make it this year, it was an enjoyable day out last year though, despite the rain, the crash & the 30k detour due to our own navigational errors  :-[

Numbers are creeping up and I rode the Organiser 200 last Sat. Great day and I now have a gps route which riders have been able to load.  I am riding the Organiser 100 on Friday with Mrs Blacksheep, leaving Andoversford about 1130.  Let me know PM if you want to join us.

Any last minute entries email me for a RS; the weather looks like it might be OK. Early start (0800) for the 200 will enable more riders to ride the finishing lanes before dark descends.  I have also avoided the Cycle Path between Nailsworth and Strtoud - I rode it on a 100 proving ride .......and ended up way off track (good job I knew where I was!).

Sorry I couldn't make it today Steve. It was always relying on me finishing work on time at midnight but in the end I didn't (which for the police isn't unusual). It was my 8th day working in a row and despite setting my alarm for 7.15 and waking up I was just too tired to get out the door.

We had a fantastic day.  The ride down to Fairford was magical, with the very light mist giving an ethereal feeling, and the sun trying to break through.  The traverse to Hungerford was a bit routine - headwind, and no sun (and generally very familiar roads).  But it was (given the headwind) remarkably fast, and I was there at 1100.  Tutti Pole was empty - never seen it anything other than busy before.  They must have been glad to have us there, I should think.

Across to Marlborough was literally a breeze (nice to go through Ramsbury and know that Spring Hill will not feature!), and the A4 to Calne was fantastic - not too much traffic, and with a brisk tail wind the average speed was up around 35kph.

After Lacock the sun was out, but the wind had turned, and was coming briskly from the North, so it got quite hard work.  From Lacock to Tetbury I was with three other riders, but at Tetbury I was feeling Jaded (sorry, couldn't resist that pun) and told them to go on, I was easing off.  Saw two of them again when they were contemplating which way to go through Stroud - with the GPS and the help of a PCO we found our way through, and then they zoomed off while I consumed a banana.

I seemed to be getting slower and slower, and by Slad it was clear that the 8-hour finish which was on the cards at Lacock was just a pipe-dream.  After Birdlip, it was clear why Steve gave such severe warnings about the road condition.  As it happens the route from Stroud to Andoversford was exactly the same as the "Across the Severn" that Evesham Wheelers put on in August, so I knew what was coming.  Finished in about 8h30 (didn't notice the actual time) so still quite quick overall.

All in all a great day.  The route was well thought out - there was some A-road (Fairford - Lechlade - Highworth, and Marlborough - Calne) but it was relatively light traffic, and not a problem.  Shame that Steve only had 21 entries for the 200 (plus more on the 100).  I would recommend this ride to others.

We had a fantastic day.

The weather did take a little while to get going, but those on the 100k ride, and most on the 200k had a glorious bright afternoon of warm (for October) sunshine.

I took-on the task of arrivee card stamper, so 3peaker could get rider feedbcak, from what I heard all riders had a grand day.

Well done Steve, Jaded, Shirley, Brian and Ron. The riders certainly got their money's worth.

Yes, I should have said, thanks to Steve and all of his helpers for giving up some or all of their day for our enjoyment.

Another remarkable 200 ride, with weather to match. We collected 4 counties and could have bagged 2 more if Steve had pushed a couple of corners into Hants and Somerset. Highlights for me were Coln Valley, the woosh along a rather quiet A4, the strange "slag heap" at Silbury and dramatic descent from Avening to Stroud.

I take issue with the sign COTSWOLDS-- AREA of OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY. when there is so much evidence of manmade  (or is it "person made") in those villages

Lowlights ? Well mine were a bit low in comparison with the dazzlers inthe dark after Birdlip. Never again! Next year I`ll start at seven and avoid them.

Many thanks to Steve and all who helped, especially the kitchen team who resusitated me at the close.
