I got a request via the website from a french musician who was in town and wanted some pics for his new album..  paid me and everything!

do you recon black and white:

or de-saturated colour:

as a theme?  I like both..

On my iThing, the colour works better, I think.  Nice work!

Colour separates his face from the background better.

Unusually for me, colour gets my vote too.

Colour for me too.
It is simpler than it looks.

Colour works for that better, despite the fact that for me, B&W normally wins every time.

Yesterday's fungus foray at the woods was good, not the least because I'd been in bed for over three weeks (including one week in hospital), and this was a chance to get out at last with my camera.  Anyway, here's a few

Today I have mostly been shooting a band.  This suave looking bunch of punk rockers are House Party Massacre and by the look of their website, they're badly in need of some better images.  We did a spot of civil trespass and shot a few cool looking frames in a disused factory building in West London.  Here's my favourite:

What have you been pointing your lens at today?

lovely bit of squalor goes a long way. why do all these punk/metal kids want photos showing them moody like what someone stole all their toys? hard to believe some musicians have such limited imagination/perhaps my idea of music would horrify them in turn tho....

Well, it was last week, in St Malo (not today) but I'm particularly pleased with my old Canon S70 which I haven't used in a year or so.

Surfer calls it a day before he gets dashed against the sea wall.

Later that night I balanced my camera on the sea wall and gave it a 15 second exposure, I love the results

the groynes definitely have potential. reminded me of one one those Google logos that had been redesigned. worth a reshoot or 10. and this is on your doorstep? jealous

Thanks!  The brief was, "Charlotte, the police are coming in to do some safety PR stuff.  Please can you get a couple of shots of them for the company rag and next year's posters?"

I got a bit carried away  :D

(No approval was necessary although I postprocessed it whilst they were on-site and let them have a print.)

I like the way you've lit it so that none of the reflective stuff shines, but I don't like the clutter of converging parrallels in the background, there are too many of them. and theyre too sharply in focus.

I was curious about the lack of reflection.  I'm guessing we have a wide off-camera flash, but not so bright that we lose the background, which I think might have helped with the clutter.  Very inconsiderate of architects to make buildings which look messy in photos.

Shift lenses were invented to deal with those architectural problems, but that's big money.

That's with a 24 mm lens, the tilt shift has been used to bring the vertical back to the level you'd expect from being there, so it doesn't look like the building is falling away from you. That effect is due to the short focal length.

Crikey. I never knew that. I just thought buildings were pointy,

That.

I think the problem is more the clutter than the convergence, and there's very little Aunty C could have done about that.  Tbh, I think she's positioned them to minimise the distraction.

It was shot in ten minutes flat with pretty standard kit - I don't have a PC lens and I don't want or need one!  I racked my 24-70mm as wide as I could and got in nice and low to give them a bit more gravitas.  As far as the lighting goes, I usually do a quick summary of off-camera lighting on Flickr.  It's rude not to:

Quote
Strobist info: Bright sunlight on axis and no chance of waiting for better light or moving my subjects meant that I used a pair of bare SBs diagonally from behind as separation lights, both maxed out.  I deliberately underexposed the whole shebang by about a stop and pulled it back in post, adding plenty of sharpening and a bit of vignette for that 'Sweeny' look.

I knew that the retroreflective surfaces would only flare up if I used on-axis flash.  But the sunlight would make everything flat as f**k, so I decided to go for separation.  Flashes firing from behind is a dead useful technique because it makes the edges of your subject (in this case, the vehicles as well as the coppers) sparkle and pop a bit.

I thought they were for giving Cornish tourist towns and power stations that "model village" look :)

The only issue with the cop shot is a lack of detail in the blacks on the legs.. needs another diffuse flash from the front but suitably off axis so the reflection is hidden behind said gentlemen of the law.

That's true, but like I said; it was shot with ten minutes and what I had in my backpack.  If I'd have been rocking a couple of pack and head combos anna giant octabox, I might have managed slightly more detail there...

I think it's really creative given the conditions.  Good use of all tech available.

Actually, that sounds unfair.  It's a great shot whatever.

absolutely!

surely PC lens is de rigeur for pix of plod? ::-)

pretty standard for what we (smudgers) do, one in the back to separate the subjects visually from the background, in addition to any bokeh-induced illusions of grandeur.

eg

just a single 120J in back, = tiny rimlight. softlighter boomed over the family in front out of shot. this is at my local shrine. little bit of dappled light dribbling through the trees

Hmm, the rimlight actually makes them look like they're pasted in.

Of course, no one should even consider making a joke about a tiny rimlight.
