Energy content in either kJ (kilojoules) or kcal (kilocalories). kcals are often referred to as 'calories' in everyday speech.

 1 calorie  = 4.186 joules . It's a straight conversion.

It's approximately enough energy for one week's cycle touring.

As it says 41 (kilo) calories. Not a lot in other words.

In dieter's calories we're talking 41.  In the dim & distant I remember reading that when we're asleep we use 80 cal/hour.

"41 kcal" is equal to "41 Calories" in everyday lay terms - less than 1 wafer of KitKat.

Dieter's 'calories' are actually kilocalories (kcal) or Calories (which is why I usually capitalise Calories; I'm a weight-watching pedant!)

1 calorie approximately  = 4.2 joules. 41 times 4.2 = 172.2.

This is about the energy supplied by 10 grams of sugar.

Oldies will recall a calorie is the energy needed to increase the temperature of a gram of water by 1 degree Celsius.

The human body needs about 80-100 Calories per hour for basic existence.

A two-finger Kit-Kat supplies 107 kcal...

Given Poly Hive's interest in bees and honey, I'll suggest 2 teaspoons of sugar (my teaspoons are probably closer to 5 grams than the broadcaster's 4 grams).

The figures you see on food packaging claim a basic daily requirement of 2000kcal for a woman and 2500kcal for a man, so 41 is about 1/50 of what you need every day or in real terms, sod all.

The following is completely useless to you but kJ, kcal and erg are units of energy. 41 kcal is the equivalent of 1 715 440 000 000 erg. This kinda makes the old advertising slogan, "go to work on an erg" a little optimistic.

So a hen's egg would supply about 82kcal or 3 430 880 000 ergs.

A two-finger Kit-Kat supplies 107 kcal...

And its wrapper[1] is good for 17.5A when rolled into the shape of a 32mm cartridge fuse[2].  At 240V, that means you can dissipate the equivalent of a two-finger KitKat's worth of energy every 1¾ minutes before the fuse blows.

[1] The proper foil kind, if they still make them.  I gave up KitKats years ago when the chocolate went ming.

I saw that too - but whist it appeared to have (comparatively) a lot of sugar, I wondered how much per serving vs daily recommended limit there was. Not that I buy the stuff. And those who take sugar in their tea, drink soft drinks, fruit juices (and eat honey on toast for breakfast maybe  ;)) may well ingest more.

Oi! Who you calling old?

Never understood why the marketing obscurantists started giving things funny names - Newtons, Herzes, Pascals.  Much more comprehensible with CGS.  Even MKS would be palatable without the extra level of labels.

The real question is: what is the equivalent number of pork sausages, and how far will that power a BRITISH Standard Teethgrinder when it's cold out?

The 'Calorie' counter websites reckon a saussage has 80-90 kcal, so it's about half a sausage.

TG is averaging about 185-190 miles a day, using about 6000 calories, so about 32 kCal/mile (ignoring anything other than the cycling)

So 41 kCal should get him about 1.3 miles :)

And to do his 185-190 miles he should eat around 70 bangers.

My information comes from Sainsbury's website.
A 69g (BIG) Ultimate Taste the Difference sausage (grilled) has 138 kcal so sausage approximates to 2kcal/gram.
20 grams of sausage will supply 40kcal.

Assuming Steve needs 7,000 kcal per day, that would equate to 3.5kg/8lb of sausages per day.
Good thing that's not all he eats!

“Hello, Steven, teatime! Sausages for tea! - Steven! Steven! Come on, son. Sausages for tea! Fresh Sausages!"

"Oh, I don't want Sausages for tea, Daddy."

"What? I went out specially and got them for you."

"Aw, but Daddy, we had Sausages yesterday."

"Look, son, I walked seven miles to the High Wood to get you Sausages. That's fourteen miles in all, counting the journey back, and you don't want Sausages? I fried them for you. Fried Sausages - mm - I fried them in butter."

"I don't want them, Daddy. Daddy, we've had Sausages for three years now. I'm fed up with Sausages. I don't want them any more. Daddy, can't we have something else for tea?"

"Oh, son! Sausages! They're lovely."

"Daddy, I don't want Sausages any more. I hate Sausages. I detest them. I have them every day and they're always fried in butter. Can't you think of another way of cooking Sausages? There's hundreds of ways of cooking Sausages: boil them or bake them or stew them or braise them - but every day - fried Sausages. 'Steven, come in for tea. Fried Sausages. I've walked fourteen miles. Seven miles to the High Wood and back.' Three years of Sausages. Look what it's done to me, Daddy! Come here! Come here into the bedroom and look at ourselves in the mirror, you and me. Now look at that!"

"Yes. I see what you mean. Son, let's not waste these Sausages. Tomorrow, I'll go to the High Wood and get something else."

"Look, Daddy, you've been saying this for three years now. Every day we have this same thing. I take you to the mirror and you say we'll have something else for tea. What else is there in the High Wood besides Sausages?"

"Well, there's leaves, bark, grass, and leaves. Sausages are really the best. You must admit it."

"Yes, Daddy, I admit it. Sausages are really the best, but I don't want them. I hate them. I detest them. In fact I'm going to take this panful of Sausages and throw them out."

"Oh, don't do that! Don't throw them out for goodness' sake! You'll poison the dog!"
