Title: RIP Tom Graveney
Post by: Wowbagger on 04 November, 2015, 09:35:59 am
Graveney was probably my favourite England batsman when I first started watching cricket. He was a much more exciting batsman than Cowdrey, for example. I recall a century he scored in the final test of 1966 against the W. Indies when Close was brought in as captain.

I watched him bat, briefly, in just one match that I recall: my dad and I went to Cardiff for the Glam v Worcs. match on 3rd September 1969, but we didn't see a lot of Graveney. Glamorgan won the toss, Majid Khan scored a wonderful century and Ossie Wheatley had reduced Worcs. to 14 - 3 at the close. Graveney had just come in. He went on to score 43, Glamorgan won the match and with it the County Championship.

On checking Graveney's Wikipedia page, I found that his brother Ken, who had been captain of Gloucestershire, died 9 days before him.
