It may be coincidence or planning, but while tile-hunting some time ago I came across this view of Oxford which gives the impression that it is nothing but a collection of dreaming spires set in a rural idyll, without any sprawling housing estates or car factories.

I have a very nice Van Nicholas Yukon (Titanium) Audax bike for sale.  See the For Sale section.

FWIW, I reckon regular riding is a good start - when I was commuting a reasonable distance (about 7 miles each way, 5 days a week) my role of thumb was that doing my weekly distance in one go was a fairly plausible ride. Maybe type 2 fun, but doable without *too* much trouble.
That was also my experience.  My first Audax* was three times longer than my previous longest ride. I jumped from a couple of 30 mile CTC easy rides to the 150km Forest Ghump.  But I'd been commuting 5 miles each way for over a year. I did struggle a bit, but not to the point where it looked like I might not finish, and the BP minimum time is generous enough to allow walking up any hills. Rode that and a few others up to 300km on a bike not dissimilar to the OP's, though the advice to change tyres was much appreciated.
I then spent a decade, and a considerable chunk of money, chasing the perfect Audax bike before ending up with a bike similar to the one I started out with, though of far better quality.  I think the OP should ride more on the bike they have, with better tyres as the first upgrade, then look for a better bike for them rather than better for Audax.

* I didn't know what an Audax was, possibly still don't, though I now know what I want from it.

I must declare an interest; EMinor is involved.
He is a performer and rigger with Nofit State Circus and his SO is a performer with Revel Puck Circus.

Nofit State is touring with Sabotage, a brilliant show, now in its third year. However, the show changes subtly with every performance, so it stands repeated viewing viewing (I've seen it several times).
This years dates (there are more planned, but not confirmed)

Bristol   18 May to 2 June
Haverfordwest  13 June to 30 June
Brighton   8 August to 25 August

Revel Puck Circus is touring a new show, Nose Dive Assembly, currently in creation.

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park  16 May to 2 June
Fort Brockhurst, Gosport, Hampshire, 26 June to 7 July
Ventnor, IOW, 19 July to 26 July

Nofit State is also touring a small outdoor show using bamboo poles for rigging; it's call Bamboo...
.
Monmouth 4 May
Redbrook, Forest of Dean 5 May
Norwich Festival  11 May
Tywyn (near Barmouth) 28 May
Machynlleth 29 May
Timber Festival Leicestershire 5 & 6 July
Amroth, Pembrokeshire 10 August
Cardigan 14 & 15 August
Newtown, Powys 30 May

Be very careful about gate keeping.

Do you think that’s what I’m doing?

I wasn't singling anyone out with that. But there are some posts that felt to me like they are coming very close to gate keeping.

Speaking of which, buses.
Waited for a bus which didn't come this morning. It's no wonder the general populace drive everywhere.

There is a train which allegedly goes from London Liverpoo Street to ely at 1707. I've stopped bothering to try and catch that one because I've never actually seen it in real life. And not being arsed to wader over to KC, I now end up on the 1807, which at least exists, and is generally not too crowded.

Yesterday JiberJaber of this parish gave my legs a nice battering, with a superb ride of 50km. First up was a loop to the east of Chelmsford, taking in the wondrous bluebells of Danbury woods and along the canal followed by a loop to the west of Chelmsford both loops having a plentiful amount of elevation.
