Talking about peripheral vision, do this.
Stand straight and look dead ahead. Hold a hand up in front of your face. count how many fingers you have. Easy.
Now extend our hand out horizontal to the ground and as far away as you can get.
Now count your fingers.  You cant.
Now waggle your fingers - you an see the movement , but you cant count the fingers.

After getting 'doored' 15 years ago I can still remember that if I looked straight at an object it wasn't there but if I didn't look directly at it then it appeared.  Reading text was quite impossible however I tried it.  Luckily it didn't stay that way.
