i've found that the ipod touch can be jailbroken to connect via bluetooth to a gps receiver. it can then run sat nav apps (nav free, for example, although you can buy tom-tom from the app store) including bike hub, a bike specific free app.
all i need now is to find a decent handle-bar mount for it…
