Connecting sound bar to elderly tv

I'm up visiting the elderly (85/90) parents, and have recieved this visit's tech task.

They have aquired a Bose sound bar, courtesy of $unavailable brother, and want it connecting to their existing TV - a Sony Bravia KDL-37P55.

The sound bar has inputs for optical or HDMI ARC.
My reading of the manual (linked above) is that the only audio out is L/R audio on phono plugs, and that the 3 HDMI ports are input only.

Am I right that they are onto a loser?
Is there any converter/cable that would take the L/R audio and send it to the HDMI port in the sound bar?

Dongles that convert to HDMI ARC seem to be unicorns.

I got one of grams' converter boxes, which is working OK.
I didn't pay for 24h delivery, but that's what I got, which was convenient

With my setup the digital tv signal goes to the satellite box, that has dvi to soundbox, then dvi from soundbox to tv.  The soundbox acts as a pass through even when switched off, (If I have it in tv mode rather than iPod or dab or dvd) and gets the digital sound direct from the satellite box.

My TV dates from about 2003 which shows up as a very early date for hdmi.
