I just bought an apple tree

Laxton superb. I shall plant it in the morning. It's about 2 metres tall at present, in a 12 litre pot and on a trunk not a lot thicker than my thumb.

My Dear Wife expressed concern (she always does) that we might put it too close to next door's wall, which is Grade 2 Listed and blew down a few years ago and had to be rebuilt by some sort of accredited specialist in Grade 2 listed walls. But I reckon that if it survives 10 years it will stands a good chance of outliving us, and our neighbours are a fair bit older than we are.

Given that it cost us just shy of £50, I reckon we will have done well to have got its value back in apples over those 10 years...

Jan and I have just shared most of the first apple from our tree.

They are not meant to be ready until October but one of them was being steadily consumed by woodlice and a snail. I evicted them, cut out the bits adjacent to their teethmarks, washed and peeled the apple (I'm not normally into peeling apples, but when I washed it I could feel the desiccated snail slime coming back to life) and we ate the rest. A bit sharp, but otherwise OK. The pips were still white.

One other apple fell off, so I washed that and put it in the fruit bowl, hoping it will ripen. There are three left on the tree, hopefully less accessible to pests.

Blackberries are large but sharp at the moment. More sunshine between now and end of September and they could be sweet.

My espalier Egremont Russet has produced a modest crop for the first time.  Our 70yr old Bramley is recovering slowing from being butchered a couple of years ago (it had grown so huge that all its crop was way out of reach, and it was starting to sway rather alarmingly in high winds).  E has another new apple tree (can't remember the variety) which has cropped heavily for a couple of years (so I'm jealous) and a pear that refuses to bear fruit so far.  Then there's the plum, which is laden and dropping fruit everywhere. 

E has also planted the allotment with several fruit trees. bushes and canes.  It's turning into a small jungle as the canes (blackberry, loganberry, raspberry, wineberry, etc.) encroach on everything around them.
