If you're a member of another forum, you might have already seen this, but what the hell. I'm allowed to be proud and announce it to the world, right?

My little man. He got an Islabike CNOC 14 for his third birthday, and this month began the switch from his old balance bike to something with pedals. I spent 20 minutes with him in the street yesterday evening, and am in full on super proud dad moment.

So, a little joy to share around.

Andy.

Has someone got a tissue? I seem to have something in my eyes, they're watering a bit.

Well done Ted!

Just imagine the feeling when they do that aged ten after you'd resigned yourself to the fact they never would be able to...

He's very good very quickly.  What with those parked cars and tight bends, that's a tricky bit of pavement to learn on.

The look on his face as he cycled past you for the first time was brilliant.

Well done!

Thanks all for the kind words and felicitations to the lad,

Got home from work too late last night to take him out again, but saw undiminished joy in his eyes when we talked about his bike at breakfast. I'm still walking around with an ear to ear grin :)

When I was putting the video together, Evey (wife) kept saying "are you *still* watching that clip of Ted?" (Fair on, after he went to bed I pretty much just sat and watched the footage over and over.)  Though she saw the live enaction first hand, it was the version with the music that got a tear from her :)

Looking forward to the long weekend now. Trailer on, bikes ready, time to go riding with the family. Darcey has definitely got ideas about his balance bike (and is fairly relieved that he's no longer riding it from room to room downstairs all day).

Andy.

Fantastic!  How did you teach him to brake? Mine (4 next month) is demonically fast on his 'run-bike' but has a complete mental block when it comes to braking so occasionally puts both feet down at high speed, with predictable results.

He's great at steering and baalncing, so is ready to start with pedals, but I'm worried that once he gets going he won't be able to stop!
Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

One bad habit Ted picked up on the balance bike was foot drag braking. Never saw him come off doing it, but it was annoying to find new shoes lasting only a few weeks before the top of the toe began to open up.

I think the short throw levers on the islabike really help, as did the fact that we didn't particularly replace the shoes ;)

Seriously though, speed is the driver here. I think Ted just picked up the idea of braking when he realised he could sustain / regain momentum far quicker if he kept his feet on the pedals. He watches his mum and I on our bikes and is probably just emulating what he sees. He also does a little glance down to the gear indicator on the left handlebar before he really kicks in a turn of speed. No gears on his bike, so suspect he's seen this elsewhere too...

...as did the fact that we didn't particularly replace the shoes ;)

EldestCub learnt to ride 'a wobbly bike' (i.e. 2 wheels no stabilisers) when he was at nursery.  One of the other kids picked up the bike and rode it, and one of the staff said "If William can do it, shall we see who else can?", lined them all up and gave it a go.  6 of the 13 kids in his room managed to traverse the outdoor area by the end of the day.

Apparently 6 kids in his room put the toes through on their shoes within a week.

Most of the other parents bought replacement shoes, probably regularly and frequently.  We bought the boy sandals and went to Granny Annie's house, where 3 year olds are allowed to ride their bikes in the house, and let him have a learning experience.
