I have a request for any riders on the 24 this year; please be considerate with your lighting! I had a chat with the organiser and he seemed to be of much the same opinion as to the problems being caused.
I know that in 2009 even the HGV drivers were complaining about over-bright lights. I found many riders' kit too dazzling in 2011, far worse than in 2008 (that's LED progress, I guess!). In 09 it was hinted that the organising team might issue some guidance to riders in future.
I can see Jon's problem, it would be tricky to phrase any guidance. On PBP they banned flashing lights - that was a good thing, but on the time trial it is over-bright headlights that trouble other riders. We're not - generally - riding in bunches. (Although I did see a couple with bright flashing front lights - I have no idea why.)
The biggest problem is the off-road lights with unshaped beams. Many are far brighter than is necessary on a good surface with no fast descents. Many would be fine if users just angled them down enough. I often read of drivers flashing cyclists with these lights, so it's not surprising that other riders will be troubled. Consider a 'main-beam' setup, that you can turn off for oncoming road users - this has worked with cars for decades, seems sensible on a bike to me.
So, there's my request - do at least please consider it!
Thanks,
Matt
p.s. Jon also said there are still riders with no (working) lights at all - probably best not to be one of those
