So is the idea to leave it at JoG/Dunnet Head for eternity (and beyond!)? That might seem to be implied, but I rather like the idea that, once it has finally reached that point, it turns round and heads for... somewhere, anywhere, as long as it is with a YACFer. It could do PBP, maybe even the Transcontinental next year(!), or it could simply be passed from hand to hand, exploring the roads and lanes, cake stops and pubs of YACF-land.

I think the problem is finding someone who's riding back from Dunnet head to hand it over to as it doesn't travel by train/car. Anyone up in the far North up for picking it up for safe keeping/returning south?

This is 5 years in the making and Dunnet Head is about 12 miles from JoG.

You know it makes sense.

Maybe I could arrange for it to visit the Western Isles?

Any chance of getting one of the National 400 riders to collect it this weekend?

I'm a volunteer at the HQ for the finish cycling to and from Ullapool. Unfortunately back in work on Monday so can't arrange a longer stay :(

Do have a slot where I could do a mini tour in the North in early September tho'

Late September/Early October I'll be touring round the north coast and over to Lewis. We won't be getting any closer to Dunnet Head than Lairg/Tongue however.

It's a shame I didn't apply Rule 17b(iv). I met a couple of blokes on the train who are starting a Jogle tomorrow. It would have been in Cornwall in time for PBP.

It needs to keep moving.

I'm in the Crask Inn tonight and Melvich tomorrow if someone wants to collect. After that I shall leave it Dunnet Head.

Wifi is sporadic so may not get any updates

Would probably be stuck in one place for too long if I picked it up and brought it to Stornoway.

Presumably it's marooned at Dunnet Head now.

Just read this thread. If you could have persuaded the Crask Inn to hold it for a while then we could have p[icked it up in September and taken it to windy :(

So what exactly is the situation?  No photos?

Did it just get thrown away? I rather hope not.

Photos will follow in a week or so. A final resting place was found in a hole in a wall.

You never know, <contemplates a trip to JoG> it may reappear some time next summer for a trip back down, as I have a perm card from Mr. H. ::-)  </contemplates a trip to JoG>

If you want company on your ride, let me know, I'd like to cycle in Scotland again, else we may have to mount a rescue bid for le baton.

Given that I arrive in Thurso at about 12.30 tomorrow I contacted Jen for a description of the baton's whereabouts with a view to taking it to JoG. Her reply was thus:

Quote
Well it's down a whole in a wall approx 100 - 200 metres from the Dunnet Head sign. You will need to demolish the wall to find it.

On that basis I am reluctant to search for the proverbial needle in a haystack.

Quite clearly a replacement  chair leg   piece of Scottish timber baton is needed for the JOGLE return journey. Jen has honourably placed the baton at the most northerly point via bicycle thinks, and that is an acheivement in itself. So lets not get too critical.

Depending on time, weather and energy, I might potter out to Dunnett Head and capture the spirit of the Baton and take it to JoG. Watch this space.
