Enjoyable day up on Box Hill.   The organisation was very impressive with every person from steward to marshall to the police/army types providing the security was happy, efficient and smiling.   Shame it heaved it down for a while.   The police motorcyclists were really having fun and keeping the crowd entertained.   There was a huge screen where you could see live coverage of the rest of the race.

Audaxer spotting included Ray Kelly in an official role and Keith and Ann Benton watching the big screen.

Just back from Marshalling on A24 just before Box Hill turn.  Despite the downpour the atmosphere was fantastic once again and all the locals who admit to knowing nothing about cycling, were enthusiastic to get involved.  It is a great boost to cycling.
Hats off to all the Police Motor Cyclists who were brilliant and really entered into the party spirit.

On the audaxer spotting, 3Peaker, of this forum, Marshalling at Bushey in the morning and somewhere else on the homeward stretch!

I was again outside the Putney Arts Theatre with my marshalling team. This was good as they have  a big screen and free coffee for the volunteers.

Early drama a Emma Pooley came past with her hand in the air, stopping 20 yards away for an excellent wheel change.
Got updates from the big screen and gave the crowd updates as the race approached, got them chanting Liz-zie Liz-zie as the break went past.
Russian lady crashed right opposite - if you saw it on telly, I was behind the camera!

Great result for Lizzie, and a worthy winner in Vos.

Do the women take comfort breaks, or do they drink less than the men so they don't need to go? Grown-up answers please.

Saw this issue discussed on the race preview post and comments on the Inner Ring. There's no reason why they can't take breaks, though it's not quite as straightforward as for blokes:

It's amazing how lazy journalists are. All the reports are concentrating on Vos and Armistead, whereas Zabelinskaya is dismissed as a passenger. She wasn't as fast up the draggy hills as the other two, but on the flat she was an asset, she also instigated the break on a downhill stretch. Her presence focused the group. I'll be supporting her in the Time Trial, ideally for Silver after Armistead or Pooley.

It's not a lot different to reporting of any other sport that has tactical and technical elements not immediately apparent. It's highlighted in cycling here because a lot of us follow the sport very closely. Plus there is limited media space overall, given the cornucopia of sporting activity just now.

Better to marvel at the result and the coverage that road cycling IS getting.
It is simpler than it looks.

That's the spelling I remember too. I can still picture it headlining the Graun's sports pages when he won the Peace Race in the early eighties.

His rivals in the 1980 road race included Olaf Ludwig, who went on to to win the Green Jersey in the Tour de France in 1990. Many country's Olympic federations defied their own governments to go to Moscow. They competed under the Olympic banner.

The only recorded British rider was Sean Yates, who came 6th in the 4,000m Pursuit. He became our best ever domestique, and is now directeur sportif for Team Sky.

+1; chapeau to all riders, helpers and those that supported - fun having forks whizzing 2cm in front of your nose as you snap piccies ;D

Spent an enjoyable few hours in the showers (behave!) on Sunday with Charles Holland's daughter (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Frances-Holland/e/B0034QHBAE/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1) -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Holland_(cyclist)
I'd offer you some moral support - but I have questionable morals.

Nice to see Olga getting Bronze in the TT. All the commentators who dismissed her as a passenger in the road race break must be thanking Arndt and Armstrong. The fact she came back so well from Sunday's effort bodes well for Wiggins.

She's consistently 3rd best.

Emma Pooley is currently winning my Gutted Loser award. She really really didn't want to be talking to a camera after that race, but managed to string some words together, thank the crowd, be nice about Lizzie etc etc ... Top blokess.

It would be nice to see the argument with her Dad when she gets home, do 2 bronzes from London match one Gold at Moscow?

She was born shortly before the 1980 games, so it's a great story.

What the hell is the story behind the Thrones of Dashed Hope? I know it's a TT tradition, but it's a mad one. Does it happen in foreign Nat Champs?

If you're expecting to finish - say - 6th, but get the fastest-time-so-far, why would you bother bagging one of those top3seats, just so you can get humiliated later on when you get forced out of  each seat in turn? I'd rather chill out with my team, warm-down, scoff some yummy athlete food ...

I'd have to be frogmarched up there by officials if I was in Olga's situation.

It was great for Olga, she stayed up there and just had to move around, I feel sorry for the ones who made it up there and had to skulk off, it's the same for Froome.
