I've just received an email from, apparently, google, suggesting that they are updating their privacy policy etc.
Now, so far as I am aware I have never had a google account or gmail account precisely because it's google.
Have I slipped up somewhere or is something going on?

eg, it finishes with:

Hover over the link and see if it REALLY links to google.com (obv. don't click)

If it is Google.com, the options are that it is either real or a complex piece of phishing, possibly including something linked in the images (which of course you aren't loading by default?)

The link is to the Google login page.

Do you have an Android phone? If so I think it's difficult not to have a Google account.

I would expect Google to send such an email to the email address which is applicable to the privacy policy.

Why would they send it to a non-Google email address?

It is possible to sign up for a Google account, without creating a Gmail address. So the account can be associated with another email address.

I have just received an email from Google about their privacy policy (to my Gmail address). With the GDPR coming in, a lot of companies are having to clarify their policies.

I've received two of these.  One to my gmail address (which I use for gmail and android) and one to my proper email address, which presumably acquired a google account when they borged Youtube or something.

hmm.  Definitely never had  gmail, and I've never had an android device either.
which leaves something else meaning I have a google account, but I still don't know what.

so either google maps or youtube are the most likely option - except afaicr they both say sign in when I use them ... ?
or the fact that my mum has a gmail email means they nicked it off her.

The easiest way to find out if you have an account connected to your email addressis try and recover the password for it.
https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery

There's also an arm load of services that can be delivered by email even if you don't have a Google Account, such as https://www.google.co.uk/alerts , following Blogger pages, etc. So possibly you signed up to one of those without realizing.
