Hi,

I have this currently on my Dolan Dual Audax bike:

Shimano 105 5703 Triple 10sp Chainset (50-39-30T) in Black
I notice the chainring teeth becoming like Sharkfins after ~3-4 years of audaxing. So I want to buy new chainrings instead of a whole new crank. I found new Shimano rings on Wiggle but only 50T in Silver. When I looked on Chainreaction, I found they ask which boltcircle size, 74mm or 130mm?

EDIT: Ok tinkering on the CR website, it appears the 74mm are only for the 30T chainring. I only need the 36T and 50T.

Anyone here able to advise which BoltCircle I might need please? Cheers.

Also if you know of any other suppliers or even makes - not too fussed about weight, who might be recommended, that would be great.

Have a look on the Spa Cycles website.  It's pretty crap to navigate, but they do their own chainrings in black that I've used in the paste, for instance...

I recommend Specialités TA chainrings, available for every crank, chainring position, BCD, and tooth-count imaginable. I’ve been impressed by how slowly these wear compared to my previous Shimano chainrings (that showed plenty of wear after only 10,000 km).

Sharkfin-shaped teeth are the result of running an overly worn chain. The teeth wear to fine spikes and last much longer before needing replacement if you change your chain at 0.5% elongation.

or sjs...

Many thanks for the help.

I bought the Zircan 7075 Alu chainrings from Spa in the end. The T.A look nice but out of my budget at the moment.

Thanks for the advice on chains Samuel, I must remember this, but as my Audax bike gets used around 1-1.5 SRs a year these days, I forget that after a while I should be checking the chain wear.

Thanks Andy, I have never bought from SJS, I will check them out in future.

That’s a nice little package coming in the post!

There’s a photo here of one of Jobst Brandt’s chainrings with the teeth worn to the fine spikes I mentioned.

Replacing the chain at 0.5% elongation may cost more in the long-run than replacing the chain less often and the chainrings more often, depending on the combination of components you run. I have an 8-speed system with cheap chains, so replacing the chain often is inexpensive and ensures everything else lasts a lot longer (my current cassette has outlived six or seven chains with no skipping).

I agree, I have a 7 y/o (to me) Stronglight Impact Crankset with minimal wear on my Dawes which I commute on. 9 Speed and I change the chain and cassette twice a year. I can't see any rear wear even when I compare with my New (2 y/o) Impact Crankset on my gravel bike - one of the reasons I changed from the OEM Sora and Hollowtech BB.

Can't say much about wear yet, as I've only had them on my Hewitt Cheviot for about 3 months, but the 46/34/24 TA specialties rings I put on the Shimano SLX chainset I have on that bike certainly look prettier than the original ones and the ratios work better for me than the original 42/32/22 set:

Shifting is perhaps marginally slower, but it still shifts well and positively and the chain hasn't ever fallen off the rings at all yet. I do get some chain rub against the outer ring (maybe just the pins) when in the middle chain ring and on the 11T cog (11-32 cassette), but that's the only real issue.

BTW Dave C - what cassette ratios do you run with your triple?
Old enough to know better, but young enough to do it anyway

I have 11-30. That is the maximum I can get away with as the upper jockey wheel is practically on the cassette as it is. There is a mild churning/rubbing if the chain is on the 50 front and middle towards top of the cassette and vise versa if in 30 front and middle towards bottom of the cassette.

I wish I'd paid more attention to cage sizes when I bought the bike and put a proper rear mech on which can deal with 32 on the cassette. But 30/30 is enough to get me up some of the steepest climbs in Scotland.

My parts arrived today. I'm confident enough to ride the New Border Raid this weekend in the gears and rear wheel which I just rebuilt with new spokes.

But in September I have the Borders of Belgium and will renew the front rings, tyres, gear cables cassette and chain.
