Seville oranges
« on: 12 January, 2009, 08:59:29 pm »
I saw some for sale in Waitrose yesterday. V. expensive at over £2 per kilo.

Local greengrocers will be cheaper, and I'll probably pop down the market with Mrs. Wow on Thursday and see what I can haggle. Three years ago I got 30lb for £10.

Seville oranges are the best for marmalade but you can only buy them in January.

I bought some to eat once , what a mistake ! But I was young and foolish at the time.

Will go and try to track down at the ever wonderful Lewisham market.

My newly discovered Tower slow cooker (see separate thread) is apparently really good for making marmalade.

Quick question - since I presume these things are flown in/not curently grown in Kent, why only in January - aren't they grown in several places?

Presumably they are mainly grown near Seville ...
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I understand that eating good marmalade is very British (I nearly said English but then thought about Dundee). I don't think anyone anywhere else in the world wants Seville oranges in large quantities so it's a bit of a niche market. I think I heard somewhere that the Sevillians think we are bonkers to eat them.

I know my pal Mel gave some to his daughter's Hungarian in-laws and they were polite about it but unenthusiastic.

I made a lovely batch of marmalade last month. We've still got a load in the freezer. That won't stop me buying some more tomorrow if the market has any.

I bought just over 12lb this morning for £10.90. We've still got about 7lb of last year's left, as well as half a dozen pots of marmalade.
