After listening to Misirlou I had to go check it against the Shadows' Apache. Not really all that similar but...
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Note that he played the guitar upside down, like Jimi.

Wikinaccurate says, if I've read the article correctly, that he played it thus without restringing it and thus it was effectively completely umop-ap!sdn :o

Yes, that's right.  Dick Dale definitely played without re-stringing the guitar.  His "thin" string was at the top.  Hendrix usually re-strung, though I've heard he could pick up pretty much any denomination of guitar and play it.  I think he may have written with his right hand.  A couple of legendary blues players, Otis Rush and Albert King, played totally upside down, like Dick Dale.

There was an occasion when some BBC bod handed Hendrix an acoustic 12-string.  "What in hell am I supposed to do with that?" he asked.

Hendrix' slowed-down lyric in "Third Stone From The Sun": "you'll never hear surf music again" was for Dick Dale, who was in hospital at the time he wrote it.  The two were friends.
