XL Helmet Recommendations
« on: 27 October, 2020, 09:38:50 am »
Following a recent collision with a car which has left me with no recollection of the incident whatsoever apart from coming round in the back of an ambulance I've decided that it is, on balance, probably a quite good idea to wear a helmet after all.

Can anyone recommend me a comfortable helmet to fit my 62cm bonce with room for a peaked hat underneath to keep the rain of my specs?

I have a large odd shaped head, and get on well with Kask, where there is an inner "cage" tightened at the back by a single knob. I've tried other similar systems, but not found them as comfortable.

(The very old pic in my avatar is actually with a Met, a one-off that fitted my head)

A question that I am (sort of) qualified to reply to as I also have a large skull.  The answer, like most things, is "It depends..."  I have a Giro something-or-other.  One of the more expensive models as they come in various sizes rather than the cheaper ones which are one size fits all (they don't).  BUT it does depend on the shape of your skull.  Mine seems to be oval shaped rather than round so the Giro one fits well, but the large Specialised one is tight at the front but has loads of room at the sides so is more suitable for people with "rounder" skulls.  I have also found that Bell helmets fit me too.  NB: I bought the Bell helmet at least 10 years ago so the shape of them may well have changed, and the current Giro one is 5 years old now so may be an old model.  When I bought the Giro I also found that Met helmets didn't fit, being a similar shape to the Specialised one.  You do really need to try them on rather than going for mail order, but appreciate that that might not be so easy as I recollect that you live in Snowdonia.  It is worth persevering and getting one that fits well as mine is so comfortable that I am not really aware that it is on my head.

One advantage of the Internet age, the returns to the likes of Wiggle are relatively painless, if not (now) always free.  Don't forget to try on any helmet over whatever cool season headwear you might prefer (like a cycling cap, or merino beany).

My head is 66cm, and longer and more narrow than average to boot, meaning that even a 66cm standard shape (if you can find one) won't necessarily fit. My LBS spent (literally) ten years looking for one. I have a Giro, but only wear it for events where it's a requirement - not really starting a debate on that, but can't afford to use it up on things where's it's optional. Mostly it lives in the dark in the loft in a helmet case, because I don't want it to age. I've had it for quite a few years now. Never seen anything else likely to fit.
