Dear AuroraWatch UK subscriber,

We apologise for the earlier false alert (issued 13:25 UTC today) which was caused by a lawnmower creating a local disturbance at our Lancaster site. For more information please see

Riding in Germany yesterday we saw two condomautomatonesque inner-tube machines beside the cycle paths.  Chum, who is prez of regional FFCT committee & in frequent contact with the authorities, told me that when he'd suggested that similar machines be placed along cycle paths here, the powers replied that doing so would be to invite the suggestion that their cycling facilities caused punctures.

As it happens, people get more punctures on cycle paths here than on the roads.

I've only been to one concert at the Albert Hall, a proms of Beethoven's Ninth IIRC. I was completely underwhelmed by the acoustic, expecting to be blown away (as I was with Carmina Burana in Chichester Cathedral) but instead left wondering where the volume control was.  :-\

Edit:  Actually was the Tchaikovsky 1812 I recall, so even more underwhelming given it had cannons!

Never been to a concert at the Albert Hall, despite being keen on many types of classical music, but I went to a choral concert in Chichester cathedral, and reckoned the acoustic was poor, and this was with artists I've heard before in other venues (The Sixteen).  Different venue suit different types of performance, I suppose.

The last 1812 I heard live was at the Battle Proms, at Highclere, with lots of real cannons, and it was pretty good.  The smoke and smell of black powder does add to the ambience.

"Charles from Microsoft Windows Technical Department" today, some also Indian-accented woman whose false name I forget yesterday. Why do they keep wasting their bloody time? What sort of dickheads are too stupid to cross me off their list?

Same for "The Vault", though at least they seem to be trying to sell me something (crap though it is) rather than just steal from me.

At present, stepping from my office and into the factory, is akin to stepping off an airliner at Athens airport.
My office has a/c.
The factory does not.

Coming out of the Estate Office just now was like that in reverse. 8'x6' room with a GBFO PC, printer, two rather warm-running NASen, a hifi amp and a south-facing window with a black blind.  I am now slowly congealing back into Mr Larrington from a puddle of melted gloop.

Starbucks.  Nob off with your 'first taste of Autumn' pumpkin spiced latte.  It's still summer for another week.

Still summer here until 21st Sept.  ::-)

But yes, Starbucks belongs where the sun don't shine.

I have been sweltering here in Londonton.
My new landline phones arrived today and take AA batteries while my old ones used AAA cells.
First call received on new phone is a spam call, which starts "with winter here..." at which I hang up.
Partner suggests phones must be Australian.
Does anyone want 4 part-used Duracell (750mAh) AAAs?

Everything I need/want to buy is going up in price!  I've got so used to fancy things steadily getting cheaper, that its a bit of a struggle seeing a watch go from £130 to £160, a monitor go from £475 to £515, and an SSD go up from £233 to £269 since March.  Ouch!  Not sure if the SSD (Samsung) is affected by any earthquakery, and i have no idea where the Dell monitor is made, but the watch is Swiss, so I'm puzzled.  Probably not "Brexitery"...
