There you go - Scotland win. And France beat Japan.
Go Northern Hemisphere.

I'd discounted that match on the grounds that both teams are in the Northern Hemisphere.

Well done England! I’m not confident Wales can emulate them though. A bit fortunate last week, I thought.

Wow! A bit of a result for England by the sound of things! (goes off to hunt for highlights).

Edit: I found some but they weren't very well put together. Even so, I reckon New Zealand will be quite cross with themselves.

And an excellent effort by Ireland as well! Lousy editing though: they showed an early Aussie try, and 5 points went up on the board, but no-one said it had been disallowed, or why. The viewer was left to notice during the next passage of play that the scoreboard was still 0 - 0.

Don’t know. I didn’t know that the Ireland and England games were on until the Graun published the results.

Wales lost at home to Georgia, bit of a shock I guess.

England dominated most of the second half but couldn't break them down until NZ got a yellow card with 10 to go. After that it was most unEngland like and NZ seem to loose it a bit. I am not an expert but I got the impression that the refs are giving more penalties at the breakdown, perhaps there has been some rule changes but it looked like the ball carrier needs to release quicker. Penalty count was 14 - 15 which seems quite high to me.
Regards,

Alan

Crikey! Sounds like a bit of a humiliation. I couldn't find a mention of it in the Graun.

I thought Jones was massively overhyped when England employed him. It seems, from early evidence in Australia, that that's true.

What does the guy do to convince people of his "value"?

Apparently England paid him £800,000 a year. I'd do it for half that, and I doubt my results would have been worse. I might ask for a bonus for having to curb my lifelong pleasure in seeing England lose at rugby... ;)

Aus are paying him $4.5m (presumably Aus $) for a 4 year contract. Aus $ is worth about 50p, so that's less than his England contract, it seems.

From https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/jan/06/eddie-jones-mistakes-with-england-why-i-got-the-sack-rugby-union:

Quote
Jones produced the best record of any England rugby coach in history – winning 59 out of 81 Tests with his 73% average surpassing even Sir Clive Woodward’s 71%. England won three Six Nations tournaments, one grand slam and reached the 2019 World Cup final.

A pretty rubbish match this afternoon between England and Wales with far too much bad temper and a whole pack of yellow cards. The most significant of these was for Owen Farrell, whose yellow for a shoulder-to-head tackle was later upgraded to a red by the TMO. It was a horrible tackle but, importantly, part of an ongoing series of high tackles that have given him a very poor disciplinary record. Depending on what the authorities decide, this could well put him out of some of the World Cup.

I, for one, would be quite happy to see him dropped - he's too dense to risk and he's an appalling time-waster with his kicking.  Either way, I can't see England or Wales doing anything at the World Cup.
