Chickenfoot anyone? (Satriani, Hagar, Smith, Anthony)
« on: 01 July, 2009, 09:47:02 am »
Saw Chickenfoot here in Paris on Monday. Wow! I've never seen Satriani before, I've seen a lot of guitarists, but nothing like him. He does everything you can on a guitar, usually in every song. He sort of stole the show, adding virtuoso on virtouso all the time, except....... you can't steal the show from Sammy Hagar. What a guy, happiest frontman I've seen (not surprising since he sold his Tequila business for $80m the other year!), speaking of which he was drinking Tequila on stage, and handing it out to the front row!

Hagar loved every minute of it, beaming smile permanently across his face, in fact they all seemed to love playing. Hagar seemed to really love Olympia too, which is possibly the best venue here in Paris.

Chad Smith and Michael Anthony thundered their way keeping the rhythm. Lots of banter between all the band and to the crowd, nearly 2 hours, all the songs from their CD plus a cover of Bad Motor Scooter (well it's not a cover is it, I suppose since it's Hagar's song). They could have played plenty more if Joe S. hadn't put 5 minute guitar solos in every song!

Top night.

Just picked up their album, without really knowing anything about them.  I have to say I really enjoy it, fills a hole in my musical spectrum left by the demise of The Black Crowes and Pride & Glory.

To find that Satch (NOT Satchamo) is in the band along with Chad Smith just makes me happier I picked it up!!! :)

Frenchies a big fan I think

Happy  :) You are discovering Satch and Chickenfoot. Chickenfoot is acceptable Satch in this house, mrs. Seine and my daughter cant bare me to put any Satriani solo stuff on, it is very overblown I have to admit, but they seem to quite like the catchy no nonsense Chickenfoot version. And the real start is Sammy Hagar, he has the personality of 10 people.

Kinda reminds me of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSAS_(band) way back in the day.

How could you ever call Rubina overblown? One of my alltime fav chillout tunes.

That's just one song! You cannot deny Satriani has been known to overdo the virtuoso stuff at times, I mean I love it personally. As for HSAS that takes me back, Hagar really brings things together, he's the life and soul he really is!

Its just that virtuoso guitar music is out of fashion right now, personally I don't care what other folks think - music is so individual and good musicianship counts for a lot. I've been a Satch fan since 1990 & Flying in a Blue Dream. Got all his CD's & have seen him live a couple of times. The early stuff is probably his best. Glad he is a part of Chickenfoot - his rhythm playing is powerful and lifts the sound IMO.

Just going on from Satriani any of you listen to Yngwie Malmsteen? Had the Trilogy album years ago but went to the land of scratch a long time ago, and was never replaced or added to afterwards.

Just wondering if any are worth buying now?

Big Satriani fan; not so much of Malmsteen and Vai for example. Train of Angels is one of my favourites with Belly Dancer. I like Herman Li (Dragonforce) too. Like Pneumant I don't care what others think; their loss.

I've got YM's Trilogy, had it for 20 years & don't play it much now - sounds like 'pumped up' Rainbow, like he was trying to outdo Ritchie Blackmore or something like that, much better stuff out there! Try these:

Dave Sharman - Forgotten Souls (Dave so nearly made it big - he certainly had the talent)
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/PkbuGIw6reA&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/PkbuGIw6reA&rel=1</a>

Patrick Rondat - The Last Whale (French guitarist who is very Satch influenced)
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/zAy5oQ6AMTM&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/zAy5oQ6AMTM&rel=1</a>

Steve Morse - Sleaze Factor (Has released loads of solo stuff - 'Southern Steel' is his best CD, now with Deep Purple)
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/K7RoPQLfbaU&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/K7RoPQLfbaU&rel=1</a>

Liquid Tension Experiment - Paradigm Shift (Gods!)

Oh and my fave Satch track  :):
