Tubeless touring/commute tyres
« on: 30 August, 2023, 08:36:19 am »
I guess any tyre can be used to commute and there's a risk that marketing dictates but it seems to me that tyres touted as touring or commuting (Marathon range or Conti Contacts) don't have a tubeless variant.

Starting a new job which will allow me a 25km both way commute going from city roads into rural countryside and I'd like to set up with the intention of riding year round.

My Synapse carbon is clad with 28c tubeless and I'm a convert of this being the way so I'd like to go similar on the Kinesis, which would be my commute bike, but 30c tubeless (size matters - mudguards/clearance).

Puncture resistant/prevention is the main priority. Am I resigned to going back to tubed? I do like the way lower pressure tubeless runs and sticking a tyre worm in on the off chance a puncture occurs and just getting on really appeals.

Do tubeless touring/commute tyres just not exist?

Thanks, Stuart.

The Marathon-Almotion is tubeless, but the smallest size is 700x38c https://www.schwalbe.com/en/tour-reader/marathon-almotion

Or perhaps something like the Schwalbe G-One Tubeless?  https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/tyres-large/schwalbe-gone-speed-tubeless-easy-hs472-folding-tyre-700-x-30-30622/

Think that's the issue with my specific parameter for frame clearance. Such tyres exist but maybe not in my size.

I'd be interested to know how they fair on predominantly tarmac road for grip.

The tubed version are fine, I have them in a couple of sizes, what you'd expect from a decent touring tyres.  A little slower than the Marathon Supreme, faster than the Greenguard Marathon, reasonable puncture resistance and long lasting.
EDIT - I don't know how comparable the tubed and tubeless versions are, looking at the link they're a different compound and the tubeless a good bit heavier.

Been running the G-One Allround on my Tripster ATR, excellent on tarmac, the dimples are bigger than on the Speed but don't seem to hurt rolling resistance much. If they hadn't have discontinued the Supreme I'd have stuck with those.

I use them (tubed) on my steel bike. They are very grippy on the road, wet and dry. I think you'll have more problems with the off-road conditions. Anything dry is probably OK, they're not good in mud IME.

HK's favourite commuting tyre is the 700x40C Almotion tubeless on her Tripster AT. Rolls fast but tough, decent traction on poor surfaces and long-lasting. There appears to be an Almotion Evo TLE model now.

Thanks.

For clarity when I talk of countryside, there'll be no off-roading. The lanes/roads are tarmacked and just the typical to be found in rural areas.

If you dropped to 28s you could try the Hutchinson Fusion 5 All Season 11storm tubeless. They come up a bit big on 19c rims.

Or WTB Exposure comes in a 30mm width.

Then we have very similar use cases. I have tight fitting mudguards and ride on rural roads. I don't commute, but I've had pleasingly few visitation in the last few years.

I'll try and get a hands on of some then 👍.

I used Hutchinson Overrides on my bike since before Covid.  I developed some persistent punctures on the back wheel but front was fine.
G One on the back now seems chunkier, but only time can tell.  Marginally bigger.

Given the amounts of grot, gravel and potholes on your average rural lane, there's not as much difference as we'd like…

You’re looking for Pirelli Cinturato Velo tyres. Perfect tubeless commuter, roll better than most of the marathon range too, and available up to 35c

If you want better performance than that, the Conti GP5000 all season is the new equivalent of the GP 4 seasons.

Meant to update this so thanks for the nudge.

The Pirelli's are what I went for (32c) and they've been very good so far (about 800km).

An option to consider

Looks like they came out (as a tubeless version) after my initial search.

My experience with road tubeless tires - not for commuting but general riding - is that

 - Schwalbe G1 Speed 30mm are great tyres, grippy, fast comfortable but don't last
 - Schwalbe One (older compound) are ok, very fast
 - Schwalbe One (Addix compound) are pretty good all round for grip/speed but seem to last forever
 - Specialized 2Bliss (geddit??) Roubaix 30mm are a bit heavy but a nice winter tyre
 - Hutchinson are ungreat, prone to sidewall damage, slow
 - Continental GP 5000 are absolutely the fastest.  Did get a nasty sidewalk rip after not much km-age but that could be a coincidence

So for commuting I'd say get the Schwalbe Ones with Addix compound
