Large capacity rear 9 gear mechs
« on: 30 December, 2021, 11:15:43 am »
I have found a 9 speed cassette 11- 40 which I would like to use on my new trike. I can find 10 speed mechs that can cope but I can't find a 9 speed one. Anyone have any Ideas?.
Thanks for any help  :)

Wolftooth or similar?

9 speed mtb predated people going silly so probable claimed max on a long cage will be about 36?

Could try it and see and put an extender in the hanger if needed?

I have a feeling Sram might do something suitable. Not sure which though..  :-\

Suggestions are that the long cage mechs may be able to cope with 40 with the b screw or a longer one, might be worth a shot first.

Spa cycles do a hanger extender too 👍

Just spend 20 grand on eagle, it'll self destruct in 2 weeks like all good SRAM products.

Actually just realized you never said how many gears you want up front.

What I have noticed is the recent 9spd 40t cassettes appear to be used in 2x and 3x set ups not the 1x delusion.

(im really setting my stall out on 1x here ae no)

A 36t-rated mech will likely do 40t without needing an extension, as Shimano are quite conservative.

Where? Large cassettes are usually intended primarily for 1x use.

But yeah, if you're combining with a double/triple you're going to have to be careful with chain length and avoiding small-small combinations.

Can't help but think the gear jumps must be pretty horiffic for road use on a 9 and they do 8 to...

But I have bugger all cadence range

But yeah, if you're combining with a double/triple you're going to have to be careful with chain length and avoiding small-small combinations.

Recumbents are generally more forgiving of this sort of thing.  The weight of the longer, partially enclosed return-side chain acts as a tensioner, and mostly behaves as long as you don't backpedal too much.  Until it gets so slack that it's dragging on the ground...

The plan is to use a triple on the front, 42-32-22. The  idea is that I can spin while climbing 1in3 hills at nearly zero mph possibly with a trailer on the back. Gravity takes care of the downhills  :)

At 1 in 3 my 2 wheeled bicycle gains two feet

OK from around 10%

The 24" gear is a lot more practical on an upright bicycle than it is on a recumbent tricycle (which is generally pulled - backwards in the case of tadpoles - when propelled by hand).  With balance a non-issue, it's entirely reasonable to want to gear down to the limit of traction.

Why not use a 10 speed one?  The cable pull ratio only changed for 11 speed.  I have a 7 speed bike with a 10 speed mech!

The cable pull on MTB rear mechs changed with 10 speed. Likewise modern road 10 speed (Tiagra 4700 and GRX) have 11 speed cable pull.

So there are no Shimano 10 speed long cage rear mechs with 9 speed compatible cable pull.

One option here is to graft a long cage to a body with the correct cable pull. I have an ultra long cage 5800 mech like this one from back when you couldn't buy such a thing. Finding compatible parts is non-trivial, however.

The other option is to buy something like this from the big rock candy mountain.

I was thinking of my knees rather than balance or traction concerns.

Edit: But actually yeah I suppose if balance  isn't a problem you can be going as slow s you want.
