Where to get titanium welding done
« on: 22 March, 2013, 10:20:53 am »
Two people have recently asked me via PM

Quote
you mentioned that you recently had a titanium frame
welded (presumably after a crack) and it's still going strong.....
Would you mind tell me where you had the work done and how much it cost you?

You can see photos / description of the repairs, to the seat tube/top tube join here

I got the repairs done by Vernon Barker (http://www.vernonbarkercycles.co.uk/) Iddu had previously used him.  He was easy to deal with and I'd recommend him.
My repair took a couple of weeks in autumn (in 2011) from sending the frame off to getting it back.  The cost was £100 and the repair is still good.  As far as I know Iddu's repair is still good too.

I haven't talked to Iddu about it but apparently he has also had some Ti welding done with Carrs Welding, an aerospace engineer in Kettering

I should mention: most Ti frames have some kind of lifetime guarantee and you should pursue this first if possible

+1 for Vernon Barker.
My Airborne Zeppelin had a crack in he weld joining the BB and LH chainstay. I got it repaired last April and it's happily done several thousand miles since. He did a very tidy job, only charged £35 for the repair, and the whole transaction was totally hassle-free.
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

It seems they're not set up yet for Ti repairs in their new premises.  Problems with suppliers they say.  Some time in the New Year they hope.

I know a guy who is certificated to weld most things - he makes good money in heavy industry.  I must ask if he can do Ti.  I guess TIG welding is TIG welding and only the melting points and thicknesses vary.

I just read up on it.  Now I know why cheap Ti frames break.

Even expensive ones.

Anyway, I've found somewhere else.  They can replace stays, tubes, etc.  I'll let you know.

It is simpler than it looks.

Depends how much you ride.

Go at it hammer and tongs all the time and cracks will appear

How many years is carbon fibre?
I am often asked, what does YOAV stand for? It stands for Yoav On A Velo

Same as diamond I would have thought. It's all the same stuff at heart
