Hey Joe by Frankie Laine is a bit dodgy.

But it's great by Jimi Hendrix!  (Still sinister, though.)

But who actually wrote it though? As far as I understand, nobody knows and it's probably about 100 years old now.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hey_Joe#Authorship

50 years old, and someone's got the copyright.

"Pass the Dutchie" by Musical Youth was, of course, a bowdlerised song about smoking ganja.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Obsession by Punishment Of Luxury probably doesn't qualify as popular but it has epic quantities of stalking and the odd threat of murder.

It probably wouldn't pass the Wowbagger Test.

Ebenezer Goode by the Shaman.

I'm sure they were amused by the idea of people mumbling "E's are good" into their morning cornflakes.

I didn't mean to turn you on - Robert Palmer.  Date rape.

The story is that he went into the recording studio, where he heard a very young woman singing the song.  Horrified by this, he immediately recorded it himself and released it as a single, because when sung by a man it's a different song entirely.

I've liked him for that for years.  Also he was musically brilliant.  Shame he died of smoking at a ridiculous age.  Bloody waste.

Delilah - Tom Jones isn't all that pleasant.

and his "Green Green Grass of Home" is about a man waiting to be hanged in the morning.

Slightly OT, but ...

I dimly recall someone doing a (deliberately!) sinister cover of some fluff - possibly a Britney song? It was very Hammer Horror style. A bit like the spoken bit in Thriller (was that Vincent Price?).

This was a few years ago. It was genuinely creepy.

Didn't the Young Ones dissect Living Doll by Cliff ages ago?

If they didn't, someone should. Cliff often sounds a bit off but - pimping and kidnapping?

I don't like Mondays. The Boomtown Rats. Mass shooting.

Then there's Land of Hope and Glory:

"God who made thee mighty - make thee mightier yet"

Really? That's all you can think of?

Janie's got a gun -Aerosmith

Child molestation and fratricide.

Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
Tell me now it's untrue.
What did her daddy do?

It's Janie's last I.O.U.
She had to take him down easy and put a bullet in his brain
She said 'cause nobody believes me.
The man was such a sleaze. He ain't never gonna be the same.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I think it was Hit Me Baby One More Time, which is a very dark song disguised as fluff.

Karn evil 9 by Emerson, Lake and Palmer

Quote
Cold and misty morning, I heard a warning borne in the air
About an age of power where no one had an hour to spare,
Where the seeds have withered, silent children shivered, in the cold
Now their faces captured in the lenses of the jackals for gold.
I'll be there
I'll be there
I will be there.

Suffering in silence, they've all been betrayed.
They hurt them and they beat them, in a terrible way,
Praying for survival at the end of the day.
There is no compassion for those who stay.
I'll be there
I'll be there
I will be there.

There must be someone who can set them free:
To take their sorrow from this odyssey
To help the helpless and the refugee
To protect what's left of humanity.
Can't you see
Can't you see
Can't you see.

I'll be there
I'll be there
I will be there;
To heal their sorrow
To beg and borrow
Fight tommorow.

Step inside! Hello! We've the most amazing show
You'll enjoy it all we know
Step inside! Step Inside!

We've got thrills and shocks, supersonic fighting cocks.
Leave your hammers at the box
Come Inside! Come Inside!
Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!

Left behind the bars, rows of Bishops' heads in jars
And a bomb inside a car
Spectacular! Spectacular!

If you follow me there's a speciality
Some tears for you to see
Misery, misery,
Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!

Next upon the bill in our House of Vaudeville
We've a stripper in a till
What a thrill! What a thrill!
And not content with that, with our hands behind our backs,
We pull Jesus from a hat,
Get into that! Get into that!
Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends
We're so glad you could attend
Come inside! Come inside!
There behind a glass is a real blade of grass
Be careful as you pass.
Move along! Move along!

Come inside, the show's about to start
Guaranteed to blow your head apart
Rest assured you'll get your money's worth
The greatest show in Heaven, Hell or Earth.
You've got to see the show, it's a dynamo.
You've got to see the show, it's rock and roll ....

Right before your eyes, we pull laughter from the skies
And he laughs until he cries, then he dies, then he dies
Come inside the show's about to start, guaranteed to blow your head apart
You've got to see the show, it's a dynamo
You've got to see the show, it's rock and roll...

Soon the Gypsy Queen in a glaze of Vaseline
Will perform on guillotine
What a scene! What a scene!
Next upon the stand will you please extend a hand
To Alexander's Ragtime Band
Dixieland, Dixieland!
Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!

Performing on a stool we've a sight to make you drool
Seven virgins and a mule
Keep it cool. Keep it cool.
We would like it to be known the exhibits that were shown
Were exclusively our own,
All our own. All our own.
Come and see the show! Come and see the show! Come and see the show!
See the show!
