Sinclair C5
« on: 28 September, 2008, 09:01:43 pm »
I know, I know, but there were a bunch of C5 enthusiasts at Brooklands, and they were having a lot of fun.  They even tried the Test Hill, but were worse than the Choppers  :P

Anyway, here's some pics:

More C5s than I thought still existed!

This happens if you race a C5!  :o

There are quite a few C5 enthusiasts around.  I looked around the web (I forget why) a while back, and found a load of websites selling bits for C5.  Some things wear out, and some stuff has just exceeded it's design age.  For example, and original C5 tyre would be seriously perished by now.  Aside from selling replacement bits, there are also a number of bits which can be updated, replaced with items which are designed to increase the functionality of the C5.

It all seems a bit mad, but I suspect many people think the same of enthusiastic cyclists who spend thousands on bicycles and equipment!

But that final shot.... :-\
Actually, it is rocket science.

A shame that it's not in production anymore, but then a very similar, but slightly more practical electric car still is, yes, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you what was once the pride of the Danish automotive industry, now produced in Germany:

I ought to point out that at least one C5 had underside lighting.  And a couple were converted to 24v electrics.  One had metal-spoked wheels, and another had a full canopy (though it didn't race).

Apparently, the biggest issues are:

a) overheating/poor dissipation in the nylon gears

b) 15mph limitation on electric power.

Was just reading the wikipedia article for the C5 and this caught my eye:

Quote
A heavily modified C5 reached a top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h) and did 0 to 60 mph in 5 seconds taking the land speed record for an electric vehicle.

Now *that* sounds like fun!

Wouldn't they have a better chance of getting round the track if they switched their headlamps off?

Of course, a large French manufacturer is turning out C5s as we speak.  Only they are a bit different...

If Sam was mad enough to get himself a C5, surely he'd paint it red.

Makes it go faster.  ;)

There's also a very good website for Sinclair C5's which is full of mods and technical help, such as buying and converting C5's ;D

Hhhmmmm.....

Having just bought a Sinclair A-Bike, you go and tempt me with this thread don't you.

Especially as I think I know where a C5 is languishing unused in a garage...  maybe I should stop on my home from work and speak to the owner...

I want a C5, I'd mod it heavily and yes paint it red too. It'd also have a bitching sound system. Are they fully electric or can you pedal too? Anyone got specs and prices these days?

Adam Harper (he of Robot Wars fame) is the man behind Sinclair C5 parts these days.  Sinclair Research has some details on standard models, citing auction bids of around £1400 in fine condition without accessories.  There are also pictures of Adam's 150mph version.

I've got a couple of 12v 1/2 horsepower 800 rpm motors. Anyone fancy building a zero emission velomobile with 7spd Nexus and electric assist? Bollox to the Manchester congestion charge!
