Now that is interesting, The Arctic pairing could challenge the Goodfellow record.
1991 R C Goodfellow & P B Goodfellow North Lancashire RC / Sheffield University CC 501.35
I think Rod is the only national record holder on this forum, but I'm happy to be corrected.

Indeed yes. Though, by the time he's ridden home, then ridden up to the start...

I absolutely swore not to enter again if it was right after the end of term but then I had to scratch from PBP and somehow ended up clicking the button.

They're still out for marshals. DM this account if you can help out (https://twitter.com/MerseyRoads24/status/1146480519162544128).

I expect to be at Prees and/or Espley overnight. You lot WILL remember to shout your numbers every lap now, won't you?!?

Sounds ominous, but don't you need a little bit of that to get the extra bit of performance?

Yeah, you'll be fine. You're not playing snooker - a few nerves isn't going to make you suddenly useless!

Only if you get your name changed on the Start Sheet :)
Has anyone plotted this year's route online? (I don't need to know for my duties, I'd just like to know where you will all be headed!)

Maybe a bit closer to the event ? This actually happens to me quite a lot and leaves me a bit sleepless so I often start events tired. It doesn’t hugely effect performance, but I suspect I’d be faster if I could relax better before a big event.
I am fitter, faster, lighter and more aero than the last time I finished this event. I should be able to improve and it only needs to be by a little bit. Pacing, nutrition and comfort are the main things.
I did a 6hr test on a circuit in Kent last weekend and came away with a decent average speed.

Start to Prees
Prees-Shawbirch-Espley-Shawbirch-Prees
1 x Battlefield
Up to 8 x Quina Brook
Up to 7 x Night Circuit
Up to 6 x Quina Brook
To Finish Circuit and lap until you finish/die.

Yes, I will shout my number. And if you're really lucky, I won't have a brain fart and shout out the wrong number or momentarily forget what my number is, as I have done once or twice...

Interesting. Turning at Espley on the night circuit is good.
Is that finishing circuit new?

They've had the shorter night circuit for the last few years, certainly when I last finished in 2016. There have been lots of works between there and Shawbirch*. The finishing circuit has been round the Wrexham industrial estate the last couple of years - it's certainly flatter than the old one.
* This weekends Shrops 100 has had the course changed due to temp lights towards Shawbirch. If they are still there next week then I'd expect some alteration to remove that leg but wait and see.

I think we all get nervous before events. I've found that this has got worse for me with time. I've done a few early-start audaxes this year and hardly slept the night before each. My rational brain couldn't understand why I was so anxious as it would hardly have mattered if I had slept in and rocked up an hour late to the start, or not done the ride at all. I mentioned it to my osteopath - an ex-GB international runner. He said he felt as nervous before little events he did now as he used to do before big stuff.
TCR is a 6am start (4am UK time) so I'm already assuming I'll have virtually no sleep the night before.
The 24 is such a special, one-off event that I'm getting slightly nervous about it and I've not ridden it for 5 years!
Easy for me to say, but I'm pretty sure you'll do very well, despite the nerves and even if you don't get enough sleep in the run up.

Yes, in 2016 I rode out overnight to an Upton Magna audax and went over Shawbirch roundabout, which was half dug up and covered in cones. I'd (wrongly) assumed that if they've got it back they'd open up the full length for the night. But the last bit down to Shawbirch is slower, so better not to have to go there.

It's always worth pointing out that the M56 is very busy on the last Saturday of July, so allow extra time to get to the headquarters if you're travelling via the M56 on the day.
For the last two years the headquarters was on the finish circuit, and was the former social club of the Champion spark plug factory, which occupied the industrial estate. That club has now closed, but they've kept the finish circuit.
I'm always on the lookout for odd bit of information to connect various events. The Champion spark plug company was founded by the racing cyclist Albert Champion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Champion_(cyclist)
Among his Palmares was the French National Stayers Championship.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_National_Stayers_Championships
That was won by in 1888 and 1889 by Charles Terront, the winner of the first Paris Brest Paris.

That circuit was first used in 2017. We did have a HQ on the circuit but they haven't been able to get it this year, but the circuit is better than the last one so Jon's continued to use it.

Had a quick drive round some of the circuit last evening and roadworks are still on the Shawbirch leg so we may well not be using that leg and be advised there are some serious potholes as you leave and return to prees upto and from the airfield approximately so get your eyes open for that so you have a good idea where they are before the night circuit .

When you say roadworks on the shawbirch leg, do you mean below Espley i e. not on the night circuit?
-
Google traffic has those roadworks ending at midnight tonight.

Unknown to me too!
I'm not looking to be a contender this year. I'm expecting to make lots of mistakes and this is a learning experience and a test to see if I want to give it a full-gas attempt another time. PBP is my big target for 2019 so I don't want to go too deep (that discipline will probably go out the window once I'm on the bike). I'm also using a road bike rather than a TT setup.
There, that's a decent number of pre-emptive excuses for why I sucked :)
-
I'm not a contender, just hoping to beat 400 miles, but my supporter had a fall on the Levens 10 this week and told me just now that he cannot travel. I'm OK to feed out of my box at Prees Heath, but that first pass is a bit awkward. Is anyone available to pass me up a bottle and some food at that point? I'm off at 1.41. I'll be at the start to hand over my box in good time. My number is 41 (obv) and I will be wearing the black, yellow and red kit of Barrow Central Wheelers.

There's a good chance you'll speak to someone at the start who can help - but failing that, can you carry an extra bottle domestique-stylee for the first hour?? Stuff food up your shorts leg!

Good luck everyone! It's a good thing I'm not racing - I've busted some ribs/muscles at a kart track  Something to remember for my next big ride.
So my cheer-leading will be somewhat restrained - soz. It's very weird to think that when we arrive on circuit, folks will have been racing for 4-5 hours. What a crazy event!

Their Twitter account is pretty good for updates: Take a look at Mersey Roads 24 (@MerseyRoads24): https://twitter.com/MerseyRoads24?s=09
Course records in danger etc. More importantly, Bunbury, Rob and other forumites are doing very well! Teethgrinder still going.

chapeau!

Wowsers - have there ever been so many riders at 500+ miles?!?!?
Massive chapeau to everyone - hope everyone got what they were aiming for - look to be some big PBs for sure.
Even more massive chapeau to the 2 record breakers (provisionally!).
-
well done everybody. after riding this event a few times (379 miles top whack) I thought Id help this year.
Time keeper 0200 - 0500 Sunday.
Nice to see it from another perspective.

Wow indeed. And 3 women over 450 miles. It's a hell of a year where a woman can ride 463 miles and be third!

Back in the land of the living today.
Nearly didn’t start and had to be talked down a few times in the days before the event. Mrs Rob did a happy dance when I rolled off the line. Paced evenly, possibly a little brisk to start off with but conditions were great. Digestive issues overnight and switched to sweets and gels for the last 5 hours.
Finished with 484. Club record and PB by 21 miles. Utterly broken today and we’re now off to France for a few days.
Good to see so many forumites out on the road, riding, marshalling and supporting. Thanks for all the encouragement even if I may not have been in a state to acknowledge.
Box ticked. Off to do other things.
-
Nice one Rob. Enjoy your hols - lots of massages, stretching and lazy swims?
-
very impressive rob, the box might have been ticked, but there's another one within reach - the magic 500 - you know you want to! :demon:
-
I know he says it every year but I'm pretty sure that really is it from Rob - and well deserved.
-
Congratulations Rob. 484 miles is a huge achievement, and now you can go out on a high and do other things. :)
And congrats to Karla as well - 468 mile is a long way!
-
It really is a great event.
Thanks to all those who gave support on the road , how wheels on fire can do this and ride so fast is special 😆
Thanks to all the time keepers and marshals
Well done to all who finished and Revellinho for getting over 400 on fixed
-
I know he says it every year but I'm pretty sure that really is it from Rob - and well deserved.
Agree with that.
And congratulations to all of you for some great rides and wonderful pbs
How long are you going to leave it before you have another go, though?

Congratulations everyone, those are some good results there. I think Pieman needs a new forum name though: he can't possibly keep calling himself Pieman after clocking a huge distance like 451 miles!
Also, Christina's record is huge! What will be even more huge though is if she pushes it over 480 and becomes the first woman over 20 miles - it must be very short odds that she's back next year.
-

mega ride, almost the same distance as mine (only 1mile less) - we could make good training buddies haha!
-
Just working my way through the video. The story I had in mind was the tandem record, and the performance of the 'adventure' riders.
The 24 is unpredictable. Andy Jackson looked the likeliest for a new Men's record, but was carrying an injury, even prior to his accident. It was Graham Kemp's first 24, so his performance emerged overnight. We had Christina's coach monitoring her performance at Espley on the night circuit, so got a good view of the evolving situation, which was a three-way with Crystal and Pip.
We had to log all the times of each rider past us on an additional sheet, which gave easily readable splits. That made Espley the place to be to get comparative data without distractions. It was interesting to witness coaching by remote control.
The unpredictability means that we have to shoot everything we can, so editing is a nightmare. The main camera has 102 Gb of data on the card.
-

I suppose I could call myself faceplant after my actions coming into prees and clipping someone’s wheel at 360 miles 🥴 but aren’t forum names like football teams your not allowed to change 😃
Well done to Phillip and George on there tandem ride as well

I started getting uncomfortable after an hour and it got worse. Same stomach pains I had for the last 300 miles of Trans Alba, but they got bad very quickly.
I felt worse after 100 miles than I did on the finish circuit. I stopped at 145 miles for a long time but didn't give my numbers in just incase I got better. And I could have had a long rest and got to the finish circuit, even though I would have been under 200 miles, it still wouldn't be a DNF.
I was in the Arctic team and Josh was having a bad night. He kept stopping and stopped for another sleep at around 4:30.
I was starting to feel better then anyway so thought I'd ride around the night circuit to see if I thought I could make it to the finish and at least make up a team, even if we wouldn't win.
I was slow and kept stopping to pee because I was drinking a lot of water to try and sort out my stomach pains. I firstly thought it was because my clothing was too tight, because loosening my clothing helped but it soon got worse. That was before I stopped at 145 miles. I then figured it was a build up of electrolyte tablets, which made sense. So I thought that drinking lots of water would dilute it and flush it out. It did seem to help and I started feeling a bit better but my power was still low, I was still peeing and being sick. So I just tried to keep moving until my 24 hours was up.
Still got it a little bit now.
7 riders with over 500 miles. That's the most riders over 500 in any UK 24hr.
I think that Rob's distance is the most ever done in the UK on fixed.
Wind was helpful getting us from the HQ to the main circuits and also on the way back to the finish circuit, so very good conditions. The rain I was expecting never happened (unless it rained while I wa in a tent sleeping and orting out my stomach pains)
My getting going again prompted Josh to get going as well. I was probably in a much worse state than he was. He ended up being the 3rd counter for the team with 24hr Maths and Nick in 2nd and 3rd place.
-
What made this such a high mileage event? Was it the helpful wind, the temperatures, SEEKRIT new tech or just a lot of very strong riders at peak fitness in the same place at the same time?
-
The field was extremely strong - up to five comp records were predicted before the event.
The temperature was cool in the day and warm in the night.
The wind was pretty good - not perfect but not bad at all.
-
The lack of the Espley-Shawbirch leg on the night circuit was a factor. That meant that support effort was at two points rather than three for those 8 hours in the night. Most chose to have support only at Prees.

Chapeau to all. Stunning results.

Anyway, time for the forum results:
Rob 484.21
Karla 468.52
Pieman 451.79
Cygnet 437.30
SR Steve 414.98
Revellino 402.66
Teethgrinder 292.77
Lord Hereford DNS(A)
Good work, all - what a fab race to be a part of. Stunning rides abounded. I hope I said something nice if our paths crossed during the race :)
-
It was the end of an era. Andy Wilkinson now has no solo upright records, having conceded the 24 Hours after 22 years. He's only got the mixed tandem LEJOG, recumbent IOM TT course and recumbent LEJOG left.
-
Thanks for the kind words everyone. I won’t be going back again now as I ticked a lot of boxes off. My love affair with long distance testing is coming to an end.
There’s room for a bit of improvement here and there, but I was only stopped for 11 minutes, so maybe not huge gains.
Currently in France working my way through the buffet breakfast. Still coming down. My legs are still sore, but my back and neck are getting their mobility back. I’m probably not completely broken, but I need to be prepared for PBP.
-
The flattest part of the course is the Espley-Shawbirch-Espley leg. As it wasn't on the night circuit, the amount of climbing in that 8 hour period was effectively doubled. That's where I'd look for increases in climbing.

Oops deleted my post. (How much climbing was there...)
Having looked at a few other gps tracks I think mine over-recorded the climb by a significant amount, possibly not helped by having different head units as I was forced to change bike for a lap of the Espley-Shawbirch. Everyone else's seem comparable with the last time I did it (with Battlefield in) and not as much as the ESCA course.

Crackin' stuff!
(and I've finally found how to get into one of Damon's videos; forget the bike - hang around a roundabout with him all night. He can't edit you out of all the footage!)
Now - my google-fu is weak this week; did the tandem record go or not?!?
-
No. Arctic lads had to pack. I think Adam had stomach trouble.
Current results not final as the organisers are investigating a complaint.
-
I have 12,000ft on my Garmin.
See that's in the region that I had. I think it's high for some reason and the actual is more like 3.6m/km. Mine shows 4.8m/km which was more than I recorded on the ESCA course.
Crackin' stuff!
Indeed. A new earworm too. Didn't spot you out there mattc, but thanks for volunteering with the marshalling.
-
I got 2700 metres so about 9000 feet.
-
I had 8300 on a garmin 200 which always reads low compared to other units I have so I think 9 to 10000 is about right .
Great films Damon
I also have probably scratched my itch with this great event, I’m very time short at this time in my life and like Wilko said to me after the event , racing tends to get in the way of being able to ride your bike , it’s a big commitment to do a 24 if you’re pushing your personal mileage.
Everyone should do it though it’s special.

One of the supporters asked the timekeeper if there was electronic timing. Edwin answered that the watch he was using was digital.
The 100 mile times, and 12 Hour distances used to be printed off when the Raven cafe was open all night. They now appear on Twitter, giving the event a hybrid feel, with information produced on paper, and broadcast on the net. It has been suggested that a big screen at Prees Heath could keep spectators informed, but everyone's got access to their own screen now.
That's what led me to using 'Living by Numbers' as a backing. It's just accidental that the lyrics fit so well. It's from 1979, so it's an anniversary as well as being remarkably prescient. Heather and I both rode the Mersey for the first time in 1999, we were celebrating the moon landing in 1969, and the internet is held to date from 1989.
-
the internet is held to date from 1989.
No that's the world wide web, not the internet :P
The WWW is one application that runs on top of the internet's hardware. Given the rise of smartphone apps, most of your internet use these days probably isn't WWW-based.
Sorry to burst your bubble!
-
Indeed a lot of people (like ESL) confuse the WWW with being the Internet.

I did say 'held to date', and by that I meant accessible to the public.

The first ISP is widely believed to be Telenet, which was the first commercial version of ARPANET introduced in 1974. The first ISP for the Internet we know and use today is considered to be "The World" who started serving customers in 1989.
I don't have a video for 2009. The first one I did was in 2001, which was a combination of the 24 and LEL. In 2009 LEL clashed with the 24. I rode LEL and Heather ran the Alston control.
I put a video of 2007 on Youtube, and that's now defaulted to 240p resolution, which is what happens if they aren't watched.
I started putting videos on Vimeo when I got a HD camera, as they accepted 720p. The 2008 Mersey Roads still looks good, and has lots of YACF interest. A Vimeo staff member started a cycling group around then, and that's his comment.
There's a lot of 'noise' online these days, which is why I'm tending to concentrate on themes that I've got archive for. It's for the current generation to focus on what's happening now, I tend to have one eye on the rear-view mirror.

The story on that page is complete fiction. I was using the Internet in 1988, it wasn't evil government agencies trying to stop the Internet from being free

So what was the first commercial dial-up ISP?

I've got the first LEL as another 1989 event, so I'm not bothered at heart.

Anyone fancy a pint? ::-)

How are everyone’s bodies holding up ?
My neck and back are almost back to normal. My legs are OK to the point where I can now do stairs properly again. My appetite is starting to subside, but I have been in France for 3 days and there has been a lot of cheese.
There’s a small chance I will go out on my bike tomorrow.
Mentally it has been hard to reset myself after achieving a long term goal. I suspect I could do a little better but I don’t want to spend more hours chasing daft goals. There’s still a few things left to do this year.
-

Yeah, like clocking me two laps for every lap I do in the twelve you're marshalling ;)

I think I’m just doing the pointy direction thing. Mark wouldn’t give me a position of responsibility I’m sure.

Face has scabbed up nice from my little off but shoulder still oozing due to the hot weather and needing to keep it covered at work.
Neck was fine but I needed lots of ibuprofen gel on it and my shoulders during the 24.
Legs were terrible for 2 days was walking like a drunken crab but are fine now.
Undercarriage a bit flakey :hand:I have yet to find I don’t suffer after more than 300k after trying loads of saddles I think you just have to get on with it.
If it’s not raining heavily I will get out on the bike over the weekend and start to enjoy cycling again .
I think a pint is on the cards tonight

I was interested in the nostalgic power of 1969. Not only the moon landing, but also the first 500+ ride by a maths teacher. It's an interesting story, well covered on the TT forum. http://www.timetriallingforum.co.uk/index.php?/topic/32707-mersey-roads-24-hour/
That led me to search for a picture of Christine Moody, to no avail. Little did I know that she was very much in plain sight under her married name, Christine Minto. She won the ladies prize in 1969, and has marshalled at the Mersey for a very long time. She was presented with a special award at the prizegiving, and is visible at several points in parts 1 and 3 of the film, wearing a Birdwell Wheelers jersey.

You can see how consistent you need to be at the pointy end. I planned for a drop off in the second half and my splits were 255:229. This was OK, but I suspect I could do better.
It will be a fair old while until I can think about doing this again.
-
The graph does exaggerate the variation in speed by concentrating on the difference between 500 mile and 550 mile pace. Graham Kemp's blue line is based on six data points from Twitter, while the others are from Strava or a GPS.
A comparison of pace to watts would be interesting. As it would be a reflection of aerodynamic position, wind direction and climbing. I suspect that Mike's power output would be smoother than his speed. The sawtooth profile of the finish circuit in the last three hours or so is very pronounced.
-
Well done Rob, so proud and glad you broke the Catford CC club record, which has stood since 1952 by George Laws of 463 miles 508 yards, especially after being so close a few years ago.
Plus doing it on Fixed my hero, and as many have said what looks like a record distance on fixed.
So glad I was there to witness it and play a part, "Chapeau & congratulations" :D

Anyone know what the fixed record is? Or more specifically, the medium gear record?
-
I'm pretty sure Rob has the fixed record, so 484 miles. I don't think you'll be able to determine a medium gear record as there's never been a medium gear comp held that I can recall so people's gear inches haven't been recorded.

I've asked around and I think it's the case but it'll never be an official record. I was on 88".
I think it would be quite good fun on a spinny gear.
-
I seem to have received a email of Nopinz saying I have ordered a skinsuit

I love both my Nopinz suits. I do have a sneaking suspicion that the old speedsuit is faster than the tripsuit but it's untested.
The padding in both is excellent which is important over the distance.

I was just leafing through some of my dad's old copies of Sporting Cyclist, and spotted an article about Den Wilson setting 484 miles in the National 24 when it was held in Wessex in 1956. It was apparently the first 24 at evens, and on 79".
I can try and scan a copy of the article if anyone wants a skeg - I've had a quick google, and can't find owt.
-
I don't mean to steal your thunder, by the way, Rob - you had a great ride.
-

Boo.
I don’t have access to all the records and the 24hr fellowship couldn’t confirm. An alternative source thought his ride was single speed rather than fixed, but I may be getting that mixed up with someone else.
-
In similar news I spotted that the UMCA world 24hr TT fixed record is 402 miles. Of course only rides on the US course count. Long way to go to chase a record no-one really cares about.
-
That's what led me to using 'Living by Numbers' as a backing.
At todays Brixton Cycles Women's Dernyfest, I learned that one of the derny pacers played bass on this. I thought "ESL would have found that of interest", if he hadn't known.
