Title: Pics of gadgets on your keyring
Post by: hubner on 23 January, 2018, 05:32:43 pm
Do you have any useful gadgets on your keyring?
Left to right:
Pen with torch and laser pointer
AAA battery 3 mode torch
Alu whistle
Mini screwdrivers (slot and cross)
Lighter
Swiss Army Knife Classic SD

Brass pen, useful as a shiny additional warning for drivers not to overtake when there's not enought space.

No because it's full of keys, and if I added any more stuff I'd have to start hauling a carabiner[1] around like some kind of lesbian cliche.

Items designed for keyring-mounting that I've usefully attached to other things include:

Shopping trolley token (hanging from a D-ring on my shopping panniers)
Little CR2032 LED torch (hanging from a loop on my tent inner)
Lightweight racing spirit level[2] (currently sat on top of a scrolly LED sign proving that it is level, it's just everything else that's wonky)

[1] Spillchucker wants to correct that to 'carbine'.
[2] Gift from the CrinklyClan

Just a little thing that says Campagnolo on it. So obviously a very useful gadget :P

I keep my keys on a carabiner. I quite like the idea of being a lesbian cliché. As long as I don't have to wear dungarees.

The only accessories I keep on there apart from keys are a bottle opener and my parkrun barcode tag. How do people manage without a bottle opener on their keyring?

Just like Citoyen, I'm another lesbian quiche. Or have been; my current 'carabiner' is actually a slidy bar thing that I got when I had a Sainsbury's staff locker token back when I was briefly Sainsbury's staff in Christmas 1990, or was it 1991? But it only has keys on it and it doesn't open bottles.

I used to use a proper carabiner (though again, probably not advisable to use it for climbing) which also used to have a combined thermometer/compass on it. I've now got that carabinerette holding a security skewer key, which only comes with me when I'm riding the relevant bike. But guess what that skewer-key doubles as? A bottle opener!

And then there's a third carabiner, actually labelled 'not for climbing use', which I haven't got around to using; added it to an order of stuff (mudguards IIRC) to avoid paying postage! And this one doubles as... a bottle opener again.  ::-)

Pinhead? I've got one like that.

You'll note in my pic that my 'carabiner' is quite clearly not a real one and not suitable for climbing use. Quite handy for keeping keys on though.

Yes, Pinhead. Perhaps it's about time some enterprising hipster capitalists started combining gadgets of this nature with something other than bottle openers though, for a change. Maybe a can opener, for those campfire baked bean times. Or a spoke key.

I don’t like having anything that adds any more weight to my sets of keys (I have a work set and a home set) so various keyring gadgets have fallen by the wayside over the years. The only item I now always have on both sets is a Nitecore Tube Lamp:

Light, durable, reliable, rechargeable and occasionally very very handy.

For some time, I've been looking at investing in one of these.

With a Fenix UC02 torch. It is rather small, but impressively bright, and USB charging. Handy to have with me just in case.
The carabiner is useful to clip on my set of work keys when I need them, or to clip onto a belt loop etc.

All these people posting pictures of their keys on the internet.... Makes me wonder has hubner recently invested in a 3D printer?   :demon:

^ Very good  ;D Not posting pics of my keys.
^^ But I do have the same Fenix torch on my keyring - albeit modified with a section of 0.8mm ø drillbit superglued into one of the grooves, to prevent the torch from rolling away.

On this years 'winter weekend Ruff Stuff' u at Beveley YHA, one chap had a radiator key on his keyring, and my goodness, how useful it was, as all first floor rads were cold.

Chum of mine once used one in a room with a cold radiator.  When he opened the bleed tap it made a great sucking sound, and thereafter all the radiators on that floor were cold.

Might not have been on a keyring, but when my cousin went interrailing circa 1987 one of his friends had a railway carriage key, which they used to unlock a compartment and baffle the guard. It seems it's the same key across all or large parts of Europe.

Some forumites may remember me taking a digital caliper to rower40's carriage key on a camping trip...

I might have a usefully shaped piece of metal on my keyring, that has come in handy for escaping from the bicycle compartment of a Pendolino at Euston on a couple of occasions.

This little curiosity....

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4609/26429512138_7539f3aa3c_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/GguaaL)
Go/NoGo Gauge (https://flic.kr/p/GguaaL) by Ron Lowe (https://www.flickr.com/photos/62966413@N04/), on Flickr

... is a Go/NoGo gauge used to verify the correct assembly of some oilfield equipment, from my former nut-mines.
If the kit is correctly assembled, the Go-side should fit into a particular gap, but the NoGo side should not.

It's a small titanium plate, machined to modest tolerances.
I could have had them knocked out at modest cost by any of the machine shops around here.
But no, that was verboten.

We had to source them from the Mothership in Houston.
At furious expense.
All part of the tax wheeze to have fake internal costs soak up all the profits, so there's nothing left to tax.

So it makes me smile sometimes when I look at such a simple little thing and remember it's furious cost!
