Look at those antennae!

This was in our hall the other night, but I didn't manage to get a good pic of it:

They are male Pale Brindled Beauty's (females are wingless), Pingu.

Was up at RSPB Loch Leven, had the following in the moth trap:

Pale Brindled Beauty:

Dotted Border:

Must get my own trap out soon....

Had my moth trap out at home overnight on the 13-14th March.
Captured a small haul, 1 Hebrew Character and 3 Common Quakers.

Brian, which book are you using? It looks really good - and probably expensive!

Brian, which book are you using? It looks really good - and probably expensive!

I have a few moth books.  The one I use for quick references is the Concise Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland  by Martin Townsend & Paul Waring.  £12.95 on yon tree forest site.
If I need more detail, then I consult a rather more weighty tome, the Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britian and Ireland, by the same authors, £29.95.  This book is a bit more scentific, goes into more detail including larva stage.

My  third book, which deals solely in Micro moths is the Field Guide to the Micro-Moths of Great Britain and Ireland by Phil Sterling and Mark Parsons.

For a beginning mother, I'd recommend the concise guide as it isn't too technical.   :)

Nice photos, David.  I think what you've seen are:-

Tortoiseshell (small)
Ringlet
Meadow Brown
Not sure but it might be a Meadow Brown that's had a hard time!
Peacock
Peacock caterpillars (on nettles, as predicted!)

This beauty was on the wall of our kitchen the other night, then visited TGL's room the next day. Unfortunately, the white balance is wrong, and I can't get it closer to the real colours, but it is a bit more blue-green than depicted.

David, that's the caterpillar of an Emperor Moth.  Appropriately, their habitat is heather!
