Title: WING camping weekend - Apollo's new bike.
Post by: Polar Bear on 07 May, 2017, 09:48:22 pm
The outline plan is to decamp to Gibraltar Farm campsite, Silverdale (http://gibfarm.weebly.com/) instead of a Long Itch weekend.   I need to gauge serious interest if we are to book the group field which I think would be sensible given that the site is popular with families at weekends.

As you will be able to see from their website, it is not cheap but the facilities are excellent and there is lots to do and see locally.

The charging is a bit oddball so I propose that if we do go then the total cost of the camping is shared equally on a per person per night basis, littlies go free.   I can deal with this with your cooperation.

We'll likely plan a ride of moderate distance and lumpiness with at least one refreshment stop if folk wish otherwise you could simply do as you please exploring somewhere which will be new to many of you.

Registration of provisional interest and offers of cooking and / or entertainment will be most appreciated.

Not us this time  :(
Got 2 weekends camping at the beginning of the month and the week after we are over the other side of the hills in Sheriff Hutton with the ALC.
Only so much money and holidays to spread about thinly!

Provisionally registering a possibility of potential interest.

I see they charge an extra £3 a night for "tent awnings and extensions". I'm guessing that's aimed at big tents, whose awnings can be larger than a small cyclist-portable tent, but do you think they'll apply it to tarps too?

I will be talking to them about the charging in the group field if enough people register interest.  I am expecting that tarps on lightweight tents will not be charged for though.

I am concerned as to whether the Melbourne's caravan will be permitted into the group field as everything I read implies that it is tents only.

As a destination it is moderately achievable for us (although it'd be 9ish before we could get there on the Friday I reckon) and the EldestCub wasn't horrified at the idea of spending his birthday in a tent somewhere so currently, subject to the vagaries of calendaring, we're a tentative probably.

Crinkles, depending upon attendees, I expect that somebody with a vehicle could be persuaded to collect you from the station - perhaps even from Lancaster if that would help.

Long way off yet though.

Everybody:   could you please let me know what size of tent or tents in terms of occupancy that you have please.

Thanks.

No idea what I'll be doing, job-wise, by September, but I'm interested. Would be a one-man pup tent person and arriving by bike. Count me as a tent-ative

Either me inna small tent with a bicycle, or me + barakta inna huge tent with a car, or possibly neither of us.  Depending on logistics pertaining to barakta's job situation, which can't be predicted that far off.

(I appreciate that's completely unhelpful.  Suffice to say, if we are going to be doing bikey campingy things that weekend, Silverdale is where it'll be.)

Self plus three bed semiVango medium-ish tent about the size of PB's. Plus car.

Do we need to tell them about the portable brasseriegazebo?

What was the situation WRT picnic benches? Or do I need a banquetting table, too?

Volunteers for that, no worries.

Nothing too spicy for me, I can do curry and wop some Raita in to cool it but Chilli is too much for me.

A Whacking Gurt Slice O' cow in a "Wipe it's arse, Blow it's nose an Chase it past the Fire" stylee would be nice, not practical though so I'll do that at home.... Possibly tonight.

If anybody needs emergency rescue, I'm only around 9 miles away from the site with a car that'll take a couple of bikes or a Trice.

Who's Up for this one?

Please see my photo of the group field earlier in this thread - now fixed after photobucket failure.

The campsite has great facilities - it's the opposite of The Green Man at Long Itchington meaning the showers are lovely and nearby but the  pub and BYOB curry house are a bit of a walk!

So, it does look like it's going to be a traditional Long Itch weekend instead of Silverdale.   I will do a Silverdale next year - promise.

Checking with The Green Man this weekend is booked out with 15 caravans.  The previous weekend they are on holiday so door unlocking for overnight facilities will be an issue and the following weekend is also booked.   The first totally 'free' weekend is the first weekend of October, 6th to 8th.

The only other alternative is the first weekend of September but that may be a bit too soon for other things to happen that will need to be completed.

So, how about October?   Let me know what you think soon please.

Ok. So 22nd September is still a Mrs. Wow weekend in Manchester/Skipton. Will watch this space for more details.

Edit: or Wing. I'll still watch this space.

I would imagine that Wing would be very easy, it being a big campsite and this being just a normal term-time weekend.

The weekend of 29th-1st Oct is an ALC camping weekend and there's a council meeting I think so we won't be able to do that. We're free the weekend before those 2 and the one after (subject to moving house etc) and if we're free we'll come wherever you are.

If long itch is out, how about Cambridge that weekend for something different.
There's a C&CC site with a good tent field to stop at south of the city center, good transport links if needed and then do something like the busway to St Ives on saturday.
I did it a couple of weekends back and as long as you don't end up on the M11/A14 junction like I did (don't ask as I got lost on my way out of town ....  :-[) it's a good route. There's a cafe/cake stop just as you get into St Ives. That was my Saturday ride.
Sunday I went to the Duxford Imperial War Museum, always good for a visit.

The other option for good camping near me is St Neots C&CC site but I'm not sure of good rides from there.

I can organise rides from St Neots CC as is home turf and know area well. Must say the camp site is rather excellent being well kept and on a river side site 10 mins walk from the town centre and five from good quality take away food/pub and has fish and chips visit site on certain nights. It is very popular.  Need to keep an eye on local bike thieving scrotes tho but. (Julian had an experience a year or two back). Rich F et al have often stayed there. Early September is out for me however.

Train station is only a few mins away by bike.

Within striking ....YACF pootling distance and with coffee and cake intervals....

Wendy's (as in Peter Pan) grave. (Her dad wrote Invictus as in Invictus games and was the model for Long John Silver).

One of the three remaining Danish (of the horned berserker variety) moats in the UK.

16th Century dovecote with guided access if pre arranged.

A rather elegant village high street tea room.

Grafham water

St Ives and its pie men. Home of some of Sinclairs inventions.

Bedfordshire stately pile actively involved in the abolition of slavery

Several major water mills including that of a well known breakfast cereal company with visitors centre.

Major new British airships

Stately pile near Cambridge

Cambridge itself

Depends what you want really.

I must admit Silverdale was looking a bit far for me so  was wondering about organising a long weekend camping at Sixpenny Handley for soft southerners and friends here -  http://www.churchfarmcandcpark.co.uk/index.html. Loads of rides and good walking in the vicinity.
I had a look round last Saturday - immaculately clean. Lots of tall hedges for shelter and we could have a separate area depending on numbers. £10 per person per night. Village shop and pub within stumbling distance. Nearest railway station Salisbury and 2 climbs to get there. (I could be persuaded to meet people and transport luggage!)

Not wanting to detract from PB's efforts; maybe one to think about for next spring as frost is less likely in Dorset?

I know it wouldn't work for everyone but for me Cambridge or anywhere in that direction is really difficult to get to. That London is in the way!
It's just a thought though - and could work in Spring with the likelihood of being warmer than Long Itch.

I could do any weekend from 15 Sept onwards.

For those with far greater knowledge than me of the St. Neots / Cambridge options, can I have a consensus on which would be best please, and, perhaps a volunteer helper to coordinate?

Cambridge sounds like it has a tent field which is splendid and St. Neots sounds good save for the thieving scrotes.   We'd need to bring more locks than usual I guess.   Also, I know Cambridge is accessible by rail but not sure about St. Neots?   Nearest big station is possibly Huntingdon or perhaps Bedford?

For those driving from the north west or even Mordor areas it would be a relatively simple M6/A14 for either venue.

I'm likely to want to keep it for the original weekend of 22nd to 24th.   Canardly's sell on St. neots was excellent save for the scrotes.   Do they have a camping field?

Cambridge is bigger site and with a separate camping field. The Cambridge site is ~2.5 miles south from the center of town so near the edge, plus the camping field is well away from the road right through the road. I think standard locks will be ok unless you aim to park your bike in the center.

St Neots is smaller site, so may have to book an area, but better access to breakfast cafe and a supermarket (tesco vs waitrose). St Neots has a train station.

Of the two I think St Neots is a better site but Cambridge may be easier for a group to stick together if busy-ish.

Cambridge has a garden centre just down the road with a good cafe, where clarion, the duck and I waited out the worst of hurricane katie last year.

St Neots is next to the river so you are taking a chance on it not getting boggy, but otherwise is very nice.

I'm erring back to Wing as a preference - we all know and almost love it and we can get large spaces together.   Facilities are OK too imo.

Have found out from 'er indoors that the dates in the thread are pretty much all I can do in September. We have joint commitments and/or scouting stuff going on into mid October. After which there's more chance of flying to the moon than me freezing in a tent for a weekend.

Come camping, they said. It'll be fun, they said . . .

Hmmm.  I was thinking more of how they'd treat a group with a large proportion of non-members.

I doubt they'd be treated any differently than a group of members, apart from the fees.  A Section meet might get preferential treatment if there was a question of who gets dibs on a rally field, I suppose.

For a couple of very good reasons I have been compelled to retain the original weekend and to choose Wing as our venue.

Usual routine:   Book with the group name of YACF.   I will talk to them and see what area we might get to use.   Please reply on this thread letting me know if you are intending to attend so I have an idea of numbers.

Thanks for your understanding.

Anybody aware how either site deals with non-members?

For information only now the decision has been made re the campsite.

Rang the C&CC central booking to enquire about 2 nights at Cambridge for 1 person on 22/23 Sept, no electric. The total member/non-member price* would have been as follows:
Backpacker: £14.70/£14.70
Car+tent: £17.80/£30.30

*Technically the price is subject to variable pricing but I don't expect much change.

Didn't enquire about St Neots but would imagine it would be much the same.

Mrs Melbourne and I will be there with caravan, plus gazebo, spare stove, table etc as required.  We'll book a caravan pitch with electricity so that we can provide additional cooking capacity if needed, but that probably means we'll not be in the same field.

Are we OK to book this now?  I don't want to commit until it's certain  :)

Unsure if I can commit to the Friday, things have 'developed' while we were on holiday.

Can I have a straw poll of anyone wanting a communal cookout on the Saturday night? And, PB, if you have any 'fluence with the peeps at Wing, is there a chance of somewhere flatter and a bit more sheltered than 'Cyclone Corner'? Not looking forward to cooking with one hand whilst using the other and a foot to hold the gazebo down...

The other camping field is exposed to the south west completely so would offer even less shelter imo.

Torslanda is offering his renowned Saturday evening cook up so if you want so please also mention this in your 'roll call' post.

Thanks.

Is anybody staying until Monday?   Just asking like.   I expect Cycleman and Apollo will be.

Our vague plan is to catch the train to Northampton on Friday and cycle to Wing via Market Harborough, returning the same way either Sunday or Monday.

At present the forecast is for moderate autumn temperatures, slight northerly winds and not too much sun.  I'm wondering if I can really be so lucky!!!   :D

I'll have you know that Solihull was part of Warwickshire until 31/3/74. Sutton Coldfield has officially fallen under the jurisdiction of Birmingham City Council since that date as I used to delight in telling them when I worked there.

I thought I would be needed for an open-day at work on Saturday - turns out a format change means I can escape.

If I can drag a bike that will take luggage out of the shed in the morning, and pack some clothes, I'll ring the campsite to see if I can get a pitch.

The spincycle(s) and the Wobblebike (which can take panniers and has been used for a YACF camping weekend!  :smug:) are tooooo deeply buried.

Woke up stressed and achey this morning (it's been a difficult start to term), so I won't be there tonight.

Plans are to get a train to Oakham tomorrow morning - may or may not have camping gear.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

Mist over the camping field.   We're at the top of the hill looking down on the mist which is thickest in the bottom corner where we camped earlier in the year.

The Clarionettes are partly shrouded in mist as they are somewhat detached from the rest of us.

OK.  Should have reported back earlier but for some reason I felt rather unwell this morning.

The weekend was a real success.

As many will now know the venue change was so that we could supply a replacement bike for the stolen replacement bike for the stolen bike that Apollo owned and loved.   Yes, that's three different bikes!   I have privately PM's many of you to ask for help in fundraising and soon I will be asking for payment of your generous pledges (or part thereof) as a certain Velomancer of this parish is currently well out of pocket!   If anybody else wishes to contribute to this worthy cause please PM me and I'll add you to my list of donors and subsequently collect from you.

I'm hoping that some pictures of a man riding and loving his bike will appear here soon, and then some of Apollo too.   Yes, I did get pictures of the lesser spotted Torslanda actually riding a bike with a look of determination etched across his face.  I am told that this is indeed a rare occurrence akin to catching footage of Teh Yellow One saying something sensible!

Thank you to everybody who was able to turn up this weekend.  Apollo certainly enjoyed himself, I had a great time and I hope that you did too.

Three weekends in 2018:  Long Itch, Wing and Silverdale.

Ah I really wish I could've made it. I booked leave from work and everything. In the event I've managed to exhaust myself (again) and couldn't face the travelling. Hopefully I'll manage myself better next year and make it along.

Some gorgeous photos there.

For those who don't know the rogues in the picture, left to right:

mlle pb
Matthew
Cycleman
Apollo
Kim
Wobbly John
Vinyl John

Vinyl John is a friend of Cycleman's (and ours now of course) and is a lovely chap.  There were so many Johns on the weekend that it was appropriate to give him a distinctive name, which I did!   :D

If nothing else Ruthie, Silverdale next year?

Angonnamo. I appear to be riding a bike . . .

 ??? <This Never Happens>

Another reason for cheering then!

And Apollo looks very happy. Nice one.

I looked at the photo and thought, something's not right.  The world is a strange place.  First Brexit and then Trump, and now this.

It does happen.  Indeed, I've got two of the things.  Sadly the sproingy mudbike (which is much more wrist-friendly on the circumnavigation of the puddle) lacks front racks, so I brought the boring Dawes instead.

There was a surplus from this exercise and these funds were used to repair Cycleman's trike after this weekend's incident.

I am thinking about camping at Gibraltar Farm in Silverdale and some of those on this thread seem to know it.

On the camp website it says no washing lines - I know there are a lot of stone walls maybe they don't want people pulling walls apart with washing lines.... I could easily run them from tent to ground.  anybody have any feedback on using washing lines at this site?

We have visited a few times and indeed hope to spend a few days there next week.  I cannot recall seeing washing but the camping site warden does patrol regularly.

"No washing lines" is one of those campsite rules like "No sign-written vehicles" that exists strictly for aesthetic reasons, and definitely not as a means of indirectly discriminating against working class people / travellers / those who don't want to feed lots of money to the tumble driers.

mllePB reminds me that Gibraltar Farm does have a laundry room so probably a drier to boot.

There's also the well-known fact that if you hang up washing in the north of England, it makes it rain.

Ah the plot thickens in Silverdale.......

'Brand new washer / drier available for the use of campers.'

Thanks Kim & all for the feedback. After thinking about past camping trips around this time of year I have decided I'd be much better off in a hostel.

BUT... Gibraltar Farm at Silverdale does look awesome, great views... beach at bottom of campsite. More great countryside nearby... so I think I'll be making a trip there in summer 2022... YACF camping weekend!?

Apollos velo is running very well and reliability .  He has moved from Stoke Lodge in Basingstoke to a new residential care home in Langley and comes home every other weekend. We have been doing a lot of local rides.
We will be cycle camping this month or next. We might go to Porlock in Somerset or Canterbury or Sittingbourne in Kent for a week. I am waiting for the care home to let me know which of the campsites have room   :)
