OS X email problem
« on: 01 October, 2012, 11:38:48 am »
I use an iMac G4, running in Tiger (OS 10.4.11).

I have lost (completely) the Mail application. It does not respond at all. I can access my email directly from the ISP, but I found Mail useful!

Can anyone make any suggestions to get it going again?

Download the OSX Combo update from here:

Use Disk Utilities to Repair Permissions, then run the Combo updater.

Let us know how you get on.

Also - great a new user and see if the Mail application runs in a new user account.
It is simpler than it looks.

Unfortunately it didn't work. Mail doesn't respond at all.

I made another account, and can get into Mail that way, but I can't find the source address at the ISP to connect it.

Another User account on the Mac or in Mail?

If on the Mac then you probably have damaged Mail preferences on your account.

You can solve that.

Thank you again.  The new account is in the machine. I'll look for mail preferences in my original account, I may ask you for clues later!

Hi,

probably some terminology problems on my part as it was late!

I meant (the application) Mail Preferences in your user account, rather than (email account) account preferences in Mail.
It is simpler than it looks.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

I realised what you meant, so I tried a new user account, which was able to access Mail, although my original account wasn't.

The problem was in Preferences. I have far too many, because our ISP has been transferred from telco to telco to telco.... sometimes with no problems, sometimes disappearing for a while. i've restarted from scratch a few times! At least we have kept our email addresses. Somehow the Preference was changed: it must have been me, but I don't remember. Probably shutting down without paying attention.

However, I'm now reconnected.

Many thanks for your help.

Steve

The Combo Update will have done a multitude of nice little things to your system anyway.
