how do I calcalute the total elevation from a Garmin track? apparently I need TOPO maps to do it using Garmin software but I have a Vista HcX which has logged the elevation of each track point?

Save the gpx file as a txt file and open it in Excel, using the > or < as column separators. It's then pretty easy to get the total climbing figure by fiddling with the <ele> data: subtract each point's height from that above, discard any negative values and sum the lot.

Upload the gpx track to EveryTrail. Here's one I did last week:
The Bristol to Bath rail path - Road biking - (http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=174395)
The last reading is a bit spurious, since I turned the unit off after climbing the stairs to the platform at Bath station, which is quite high up.

This is a useful find. The combined view of altitude against distance and time really highlights the effect of stopping at controls!

How do I use it?
From the website
GPS Altitude Chart is cross platform Java software. It runs on Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X, Linux - everywhere where Sun's Java runtime environment (Version 1.5 and newer) is available.
From the readme
The software is pretty much self explaining, so at the time there is no manual.
From my downloads folder is GPSAltitudeChart.exe, and when I try opening it in ubuntu (which has the Java runtime environment) all I get is

Ignore the .exe.
java -jar GPSAltitudeChart.jar
Works for me on OS X.

"Not very well documented at all." <- understatement of the year!
The bottom of the screen is too high for the options boxes, and when I drag the bottom of the window down, the box readjusts itself lower so it's still not fully on view :-\ This is exactly the same as with JOSM (and one of the reasons I can't set my options in it).
Might this be to do with my java settings? and if yes, how can I mend them?
