Ah, Wally!  I wish he'd be more direct and plain-spoken - he's always pussyfooting around the lemonade and rosé wine issues.

I do love a grumpy landlord. The bloke at Pleshy's Leatjer Bottle was a classic chap too!

I'm disappointed that the opening of the Baddow Pump track hasn't been mentioned and a ride scheduled to incorporate it  :P

Where's the nearest (decent) pub?

I've put the post code into the good beer guide app and it puts the following as closest:

Woolpack
Cricketers
Orange Tree
Queens Head

Not sure I've been in any of those before. bobb, anyone else been to them?

http://www.the-ot.com/ might be worth a look, it has links with the excellent http://www.spokes.uk.com/ company

None of those pubs are actually in Great Baddow. I guess they're just near by postcode....

There is a nice pub, but I can't remember what it's called (or exactly where it is!) near the Marconi/GEC (whatever it's called this week) site....
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

Another pub that is apparently worth a visit is the Thatchers Arms at Mount Bures.

Anyone on for this Wednesday? I could do with some fresh air, which might help see off this cold I seem to have inherited from the rest of the family.

Yep, up for an outing this week either with new steed or 'old'  :)
If I'm on new wheels then I'll probably be slightly slower!

I was, in an unusual fit of forward-planning, suggesting a visit to The White Hart at Margaretting Tye, somewhere upthread if you fancy looking in there to sample their winter beer festival wares?

It's possible that some of us might be available for that. The White Hart is a Good Pub.

Looks good to me, it may not even include a gratuitous visit to NH!
I tried a pint of Southwold Brewery's Winter Spice the other day - it was very nice.
Up for some more winter beer sampling

How about this?

It includes 3 ascents of TMNH. Does that suit?  O:-)

The usual Witham peleton of two meets at the Jack & Jenny @ 19:30
I'll plot a route tonight/tomorrow that will include NH (additional assents optional).  Probable arrival time between 20:30 and 20:45 at The White Hart.

(given the posh look of The White Hart can we assume they have a suitable area for sweaty & steamy cyclists?  :P )

Top banana. I will place my front wheel slight behind and to the right of your back wheel and you can tow me all the way.

I may be just a few minutes later than 1930 hours as I will have to escort Twinkle Toes to Sprouts.

I thank you.

You can get an app for that.

BTW, Steve, you seem to be remarkably close to achieving your annual target. I've got only another 19 or so miles to do to get mine, and I reckon by the time I reach the pub tomorrow I'll have done it. If you can get your miles in by then (and 3 ascents should do it) we can have a double celebration!

I'm out of the country at the moment, but I should be up for next time. I'll save discussing where to go until after you lot have done this one though!

 Not sure how many will be out and about from this end yet. I'll be there, taking it easy and I hope not infectious by tomorrow evening ::-) I managed a very gentle ride with the Chelmsford CTC on Sunday, when I was at maximum bunged-upness, so fingers crossed.

I doubt I will have hit my target by the time we get to the pub so I will hold off on celebrating until I hit it, which should be by the time I get home, unless I get the bus home  ;D

Ok, plotted a route that looks something like this, mine only includes a single ascent of NH but multiples are optional, unless you'd like to follow Wow's route.
Guesstimated ride time to The White Hart is 1 hour 20 mins, so usual departure time would put us there around 20:50, but there appears to be a request to start a little later, OD??

A round trip of around 36.5 miles should see OD safely hit his annual target tonight, provided no buses/breakdown vehicles/taxis/rescue missions from OHs/B&B stays at The White Hart are involved in the winter beer sampling.  It will also be a good first run for the new steed if it arrives today  ::-)

 looks good to me.  Outbound is strangely similar to one of my options below :)  I should be able to do that on autopilot.  I see you've utilised the A12 crossing from the 3 Elms trip on the return leg.

The usual Witham peleton of two meets at the Jack & Jenny @ 19:30
I'll plot a route tonight/tomorrow that will include NH (additional assents optional).  Probable arrival time between 20:30 and 20:45 at The White Hart.
NOTE: the below was written (but not posted!) before huggy's planned route (above) appeared.

The No Frills route is obvious, and is so direct and perfectly straight it must've been created by Romans.

It's a bit longer (but nicer) to carry on straight across at Danbury and then take Moor Hall Lane to bypass Bicknacre, before carrying on through the Hanningfields/Stock etc...

The bar area, whilst still on the nice side, has accommodated sweaty & steamy thirsty and fragrant cyclists rather nicely in the past. (1 2)
